Bonkers bounced back the following year as energy providers began to feel confident enough to offer discounts again for customers and when mortgage rates began to edge back down. The company says it assists tens of thousands of people in Ireland each year in switching providers, and has expanded from initially comparing household bills to now offering mortgage switching along with car and home insurance. Crowds gathered in Nuuk, Greenland, on Saturday to protest against US president Donald Trump's stated aim to annex Greenland. They view this as a possible form of leverage to encourage Mr Trump to back down on his plans to take control of Greenland. The trade agreement provided for a 15 per cent tariff rate ceiling on European exports to the US, including pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. Taoiseach Micheál Martin on Sunday criticised Mr Trump’s tariff threats as “extraordinary” and “unacceptable”. Mr Trump, meanwhile, faced criticism from some within his own Republican Party over his moves to control Greenland.

When they say a team’s name is on the cup, it can seem like an exaggeration, but not in the case of Kerry football champions Dingle. Not alone did it appear that their first All-Ireland senior club football title had been preordained, but the method of winning it had been prescribed. Winning captain Paul Geaney exultantly blasted the ball wide and there it ended. Dingle’s Mikey Geaney, Paul Geaney and Conor Geaney celebrate their All-Ireland club SFC final victory. “You often hear about managers coming in, but in Ballygunner, the senior players create the environment and set the standards.

Donald Trump’s threat to the global order is such that derisking and diversification are not enough, according to one Nobel laureate. Nobel economics laureate Joseph Stiglitz argues that Trump’s threat to the global order is such that derisking and diversification are not enough. “The United States will remain the most economically and militarily powerful country in the world for several more years. But it will be absent from, if not actively hostile toward, the existing international order,” he wrote in Foreign Policy this month. “By the time the United States is ready to return to multilateralism, the world will have moved on.

Dublin District Court heard the mother of a teenage girl was 'left to walk the streets looking for her' after she repeatedly left her unregulated placement. The court heard his parents “offered no explanation” as to how their son was injured to an emergency department doctor, saying they “did not know what happened”. The court heard [he] was now thriving in foster care,” said a report on the case published on Monday. Dublin District Court heard the girl was in what is known as a special emergency arrangement (SEA) – a placement that falls outside statutory regulations, and had “repeatedly gone missing”. Japan’s prime minister Sanae Takaichi is taking a bold gamble with her decision to call a snap election after just three months in office. A bigger mandate would offer the prime minister a stronger basis to pursue her controversial policies at home and abroad. A foreign policy hawk who favours higher defence spending and closer ties with the United States, Takaichi triggered a diplomatic standoff with China only a few weeks after taking office. She said that an invasion of Taiwan could represent an existential threat to Japan, justifying the deployment of Japanese forces. And her plan has already hit a complication with the decision of two opposition parties to merge ahead of the election.

Europe’s ability to feed itself to high standards is now a core element of its economic and strategic resilience. Far from a routine trade measure, it is a strategic signal that the global food system is being reshaped by power, risk and geopolitics. For producers, policymakers and trade negotiators, particularly in Europe, this development sharpens the focus on the intersection of food security, geopolitics and long-term strategic planning. Agricultural policy, trade strategy and food-system resilience can no longer be designed on the assumption of “politically neutral food”. In such an environment, a resilient food system must now be regarded as part of Europe’s broader strategic defence architecture, alongside energy security and military preparedness.
