A packed Greek court erupted in cheers tonight as a Kerry humanitarian was found not guilty of people smuggling, belonging to a criminal organisation and money laundering almost eight years after the charges were first brought. Outside the court in Mytilene, confetti and champagne corks exploded as all 24 defendants and their supporters celebrated their acquittal. Mr Binder said that the charges had been spurious from the beginning, designed to deter humanitarians from operating on the island. It was not proven that the defendants had been in contact with any specific people smugglers, the court heard. Humanitarians told the Court of Appeal that they felt obliged to volunteer and try to save lives as the authorities often failed to respond.

One defendant spoke of seeing people crushed to death on crowded boats, unable to help. She also remembered lifting children’s cold, limp bodies from those boats, not knowing if they were dead or alive. "I felt that as a European citizen and someone with search and rescue training that I could assist,” he told the court. Mr Binder found the Greek search and rescue organisation ERCI online and applied to volunteer. He believed that search and rescue should investigate information from locals, other NGOs, and on social media regarding potential boats in distress.

Meath manager Robbie Brennan has promised to 'keep a close eye' on former Kerry underage star Devon Burns after his switch to the Royal County. Burns started the 2024 Dublin SFC final for Crokes and featured again in 2025 before recently transferring to top Meath side Ratoath. Burns had a stint on the Kerry senior panel too and could now come on the radar for a shock Meath call up. Obviously he'd have to play for Ratoath before he's even eligible for the county but we'll keep a close eye on him and see how he goes. Cian McBride's Man of the Match performance for TU Dublin in Tuesday night's Sigerson Cup win over MTU Kerry gives Brennan a strong option at midfield.

This includes 993 offences in Cork City, 141 in Mallow, and 137 in Clonakilty District Courts. In total, 1,021 burglary offences were dealt with at the district court level in the county, while 250 were sent forward for trial to the circuit court. The figures were provided to Ireland South MEP and former barrister Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, who said the difference between the number of offences and number of perpetrators “highlights a high level of repeat or multiple offending”. “The figures point to a relatively small group of repeat offenders that are responsible for a disproportionate share of burglary offences,” she said.
