Public service media's relevanceFirst, should public service media continue to exist at all in an increasingly fragmented media landscape? Yet there is still space for aspiration: we argue that public service media — defined by the Public Media Alliance as publicly owned multi-platform media organisations providing relevant, credible and impartial news, entertainment, and education to their audiences — remain an important counterpoint to both international streaming platforms and purely commercial media. RTÉ and BBC in a united IrelandIf we accept some form of public service media is important, the second key question is what would a united Ireland mean for RTÉ and the BBC? Marketisation, little or no formal public service media provision, and commercial media dominance. This option, “Public Media Ireland”, would protect jobs and pension provisions in both, recognising the existing value and skillsets within these organisations.

It was the grotesque culmination of a week in which the killing of a 37-year-old woman on a Minneapolis street became a laboratory for every pathology afflicting the information ecosystem. Renée Nicole Good was killed on Wednesday morning in Minneapolis. Grok itself acknowledged the images of Good may violate US legislation criminalising non-consensual intimate images, including AI deepfakes. Munster GAA’s gate receipts surpassed the €9.5 million mark in 2025, bringing their total revenue to €12.667m. The province’s 11-game senior hurling championship comprised €8.381m or 88% of its gate receipts for the year. On the flipside, gate receipts for the five-game Munster senior football championship declined by almost €50k to €477,045 as attendances fell by 7%. In total, Munster GAA paid out €555,974 in ticketing costs last year.

Ioan Giurgila, the injured cyclist, also saw his damages for 12 soft tissue injuries reduced by 80 per cent, slashing his total damages to €17,628 and costs. The reduction came as the judge concluded Mr Giurgila had been mainly responsible for the collision, which happened at 6am on a September morning back in 2020. The Irish Cycling Campaign also said it is "deeply concerned" by the judge's comments and suggested they "risk normalising hostility toward people who choose to travel by bike". Likewise, Úna Morrison from the Dublin Cycling Campaign appeared on morning television to call the remarks "really inappropriate". It was also highlighted that Mr Giurgila had not signalled before moving out of a bus lane.

Man City put one foot in Carabao Cup finalBy Damian Spellman, Press AssociationAntoine Semenyo scored his second goal in as many games for his new club as Manchester City secured a precious Carabao Cup semi-final advantage over holders Newcastle. City might have travelled back across the Pennines with one foot firmly in the final had Semenyo not seen a second goal controversially chalked off following a review on a night when the Magpies were neither clinical nor stubborn enough to claim the foothold they needed for the return. Joelinton flicked a header wide from a 15th-minute Gordon cross after a rare Newcastle attack and with the Brazil international taking no prisoners in midfield, the hosts began to establish themselves. But for all the bluster and endeavour, an entertaining first half ended goalless and with neither keeper having made a save of note. However, it was the visitors who took the lead three minutes later when Silva touched Doku’s cross into the path of Semenyo, who stabbed home from close range.

The GAA’s ethics and integrity commission’s (EIC) review of its commercial relationship with Allianz has recommended the GAA conduct an ethical audit of all its contractual arrangements. The Irish Examiner has seen the EIC’s report, which advised the GAA’s Management Committee’s decision last month to retain its links with Allianz despite highlighting a sibling company had links with the war in Gaza. However, they also point out that this “does not absolve GAA units from any obligation to act ethically in business arrangements in general and sponsorship agreements in particular.” The height of the ethical watermark GAA units are expected to reach is a concern for the EIC. They listed a number of commercial agreements counties and clubs currently have with companies that could be questioned on such grounds. They also pointed out Microsoft and Google, which were cited in Albanese’s report as being directly complicit in Israel’s military efforts in Gaza, “are in daily use throughout the GAA”.

IF you ever worked in the mighty Mirror building at 33 Holborn, step back in time here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWEqU8itBlsFormer MGN ad man Johnnie French sent us the link, which plays a 1961 Brtish Movietone newsreel of the opening of the then revolutionary Mirror building in Holborn in 1961. It’s part of a massive collection of photos and newsreels curated by Associated Press (https://newsroom.ap.org/editorial-photos-videos). The quality of the black and white film leaves a bit to be desired, but that all adds to the atmospherics of this 11-minute slice of precious Mirror Group history. The commentary is dated and sounds very “old BBC”, all accent and nasal intonation, and the vehicles, clothes, hairstyles – and the moustaches – are clearly from the early 60s. The exterior shots bring back memories, but it’s the social history which grabs the attention.

The same month, Badejo was transferred to the same hospital as the alleged victim due to an admin error.
