I first went to the gym in earnest a little over two years ago. I was self-conscious of my body and aware that anyone looking could see I didn’t know what I was doing. I understand – in theory – that a body will get better at any action you ask of it consistently over time. In the gym, though, I sincerely wondered if my body might be an exception to this. We can become courageous, Aristotle says, by doing courageous things.

Unscheduled weekend statements from the Federal Reserve are, to put it mildly, not generally a good sign. It is well worth viewing Sunday’s video from Fed chairman Jay Powell through that lens. US president Donald Trump has long spoken in thuggish terms about Powell and his reluctance to slash interest rates as fast as the president would like. The next Fed chairman will, in everything but name, be Donald Trump, with all the adventures in rate policy and regulatory supervision that entails. We should be mindful, also, that markets professionals are straining every sinew to appear politically neutral and not to upset Trump.

Now everyone from children to restaurant staff have made a local red cap a runaway success thanks to its cheeky message: Nu det NUUK. It’s a Danish play on words with the Greenland capital, that means: Now it’s enough. On the side, the Greenland flag and its own Maga slogan: Make America Go Away.

Selena Gomez and husband Benny Blanco enjoyed a date night at the 2026 Golden Globes on Sunday. Gomez channeled old Hollywood glamour in a black, strapless, velvet Chanel gown with elaborate white feather trim at the neckline. To match the look, she wore her brunette hair in a side part and tightly coiffed 'Dolce Vita' bob. For his part Blanco kept his look equally classic, stepping out in a double-breasted black suit with satin lapels. 'Hosting the Golden Globes this year was without a doubt the most fun I have ever had in my career,' Glaser, 41, said in March 2025.

An Post announces latest increase in stamp pricesAn Post has announced a further increase in stamp prices, which it said was a result of a continuing decline in letter volumes along with rising overheads. From Tuesday, February 3, the cost of a national stamp will increase by 20 cent, to €1.85. A new €3.50 rate is being introduced for mail to Europe (including Great Britain) and a new 'Rest of World' rate of €3.95 is also being implemented. Leinster’s one-point victory over La Rochelle was, he writes, both “titanic and slightly fortuitous”, Harry Byrne’s late penalty proving decisive. For Connacht, it was a tale of frustration, writes Linley MacKenzie, after they gave up a 15-point lead to lose their Challenge Cup game away to Montpellier. In Gaelic games, it was a heckuva weekend in Croke Park for Munster clubs – four finals, four triumphs. And over in Tallahassee, Brian Fay secured Ireland’s best result at the World Cross Country Championships in over a decade. At 7pm, Cork and Clare square up in the Munster Hurling League (TG4 YouTube) and at 7.45pm Liverpool host Barnsley in the FA Cup (TNT Sports 1).

Vice President JD Vance then dutifully proclaimed that “the gaslighting is off the charts,” dismissing all criticism as lies. The liar, he argued, is paradoxically oriented toward truth: to lie successfully, one must know what is true and deliberately say the opposite. There is no motive for regurgitating an obvious lie except to demonstrate fealty. The administration’s response is something else: a demonstration that, in Trump’s America, regurgitating obvious lies is how high officials prove their worth. Survival in Trump’s orbit requires a robotic renunciation of conscience and a performative lobotomization of the self.

Employers are recognising that staff do better when they can choose a workspace that suits their needs and mood. Photograph: iStockWhen Cisco employees arrive at work in London, their first task is finding a place to sit. It is one of several employers redesigning offices for the different ways its staff may want to work. It is estimated that one in seven people is neurodivergent, yet offices tend to be designed with neurotypicals in mind. They can choose between high and low stimulation zones, with control over factors such as light, ventilation and temperature.

Republican Sen. Lindsay Graham told President Donald Trump to take strong action in Iran amid a brutal crackdown on protesters who have taken to the streets in recent days against the Islamic government. 'If I were you, Mr. President, I would kill the leadership that are killing the people,' Graham said on Sunday Morning Futures. You are the Ronald Reagan-plus of our time,' the MAGA senator said after earlier comparing Trump's rhetoric on the Iranian protests to Reagan's famous declaration that Mikhail Gorbachev tear down the Berlin wall. Iranian officials have since threatened reprisals against any Western intervention, as they blame the protests on US and Israeli agitators. The estimated number killed more than doubled in 24 hours amid the regime's desperate bid to ensure its own survival.

Neither Ms Somerville nor her colleagues see it as anything approaching a priority to put curbs on the toxic dependency culture which stifles growth and ambition. Work should and must always be a road out of poverty and if it isn’t, then the system is badly flawed. But Ms Somerville appears to be accepting the situation – one which the SNP has helped to create and sustain – and sending a signal that the burgeoning benefits bill is here to stay. But Ms Somerville won’t accept that ‘in-work’ poverty has been exacerbated by unrelenting SNP tax raids. They pay soaring council tax for a diminishing standard of service which sees roads deteriorating and rubbish lying uncollected.
