Yet, by removing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, Trump has repeated Bush’s mistake. In 1992, American conservative writer Michael Ledeen reportedly said: “Every 10 years or so, the United States needs to pick up some small crappy little country and throw it against the wall, just to show the world we mean business.” Actually, such gratuitous demonstrations of might betray the fear that American world power is slipping. In Iraq, regime change resulted in years of deadly civil war and a costly US occupation that lasted nearly a decade. Another key difference between Bush’s war in Iraq and Trump’s in Venezuela is that Bush was a far more popular president. Bush held a 58 per cent approval rating before Iraq; Trump’s approval rating is about 38 per cent.

My guess is that if the relevant committee had included more women, it might have been “perimenopause”, which wasn’t a word until recently. The vocabulary of this sorry tale is revealing: women – apparently all women – need “hormone replacement therapy”, as if the natural body has broken down and must be “replaced” by pharmacology. I have friends who do take HRT and friends who don’t and until we talk about it you wouldn’t know the difference. (No replacement for randomised controlled trials, obviously; you’d hope those who do are the ones who need it and those who don’t, don’t.) These are potentially, if you’re lucky, years of relative freedom and strength and opportunity, which is why patriarchy loathes women in midlife.

The US action shocked governments around the world but many were cautious in their comments, emphasising the need to uphold international law, rather than explicitly condemning the Trump administration’s actions. Senior Irish officials confirmed there had been extensive behind-the-scenes contacts between EU leaders on the issue on Saturday in the hours after news of the attack first broke early that day. “Under all circumstances, the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be respected. Organiser Céile Varley said she was “horrified” by the bombing of the capital, Caracas, and capture of Mr Maduro. “But there is such a thing as international law,” he said.

In October Dublin District Court judge Conor Fottrell said the use of “unregulated, unregistered placements” for children in care “should come to an end”. At the end of that month, there were 185 children in SEAs, of whom 68 per cent were separated children seeking asylum. The data released to The Irish Times shows in total, up to August last year, Tusla spent €36,058,553 on SEAs.
