SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has issued fresh guidelines for setting up coke oven plants (with an installed production capacity of less than 25,000 MT per annum) in the state. The notification has been issued by the Meghalaya Forest and Environment Department. There should be a minimum distance of 1 km between two standalone coke plants, the notification stated. In addition, there should be a provision for a common approach road for the units in a cluster, it said. The state government has been under fire for the past several years for its alleged inaction against illegally operating coke plants, particularly in West Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills.

IPOH: Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Ayob (pic) officially handed over the leadership of the Royal Malaysian Navy to Vice Admiral Datuk Zulhelmy Ithnain, who is the new Acting Chief of Navy. The Navy headquarters Strategic Communications Division said in a statement that the handover ceremony was held at the auditorium of Wisma Pertahanan on Thursday (Aug 1), officiated by Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Mohammad Ab Rahman, and witnessed by Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari. Chief of Army Gen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddean Jantan, Chief of Air Force Gen Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman, Malaysian Armed Forces Chief of Staff, Lt Gen Datuk Arman Rumaizi Ahmad, along with senior Navy officials were also in attendance. Abdul Rahman was appointed as the 18th Chief of Navy on Jan 27 last year and will retire on Dec 2. He was the first submariner to be appointed Chief of Navy.- Bernama

Kenya has reaffirmed her continued commitment to playing the mediator role towards the restoration of peace and stability in the troubled South Sudan nation. President William Ruto made the assurance on Thursday when he met the AU Panel of the Wise (PoW) at State House, Nairobi. “Kenya remains steadfast in the South Sudan journey towards the consolidation of peace and security. Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has written to the National Assembly asking the House not to approve the nomination of Wycliffe Oparanya as Cabinet Secretary over alleged integrity issues. In a letter dated July 29 and addressed to the Clerk of the National Assembly, EACC highlighted that Oparanya, the Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development CS nominee is faced with an alleged graft case. However, in quick response, Oparanya has written to Parliament disputing claims by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission that he has a pending corruption case hanging over his head. “We are instructed to inform you that there is neither investigation nor charges pending against Hon Oparanya to merit any well-intentioned complaint against him. In the case, EACC is seeking to recover the billions from Oparanya and several companies associated with officials of the Kakamega County government amounting to Sh1,387,310,025.
