Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has notified members of a scheduled State of the Nation address to Parliament by President William Ruto this Thursday. The notification of the joint sitting, made in line with the Senate standing orders, will take place at the National Assembly's main chamber. "I wish to inform the House that I have received a message from His Excellency the President conveying that he intends to deliver the State of the Nation address to Parliament,” he said. This will be Ruto’s third address since he assumed office. This year's address comes two weeks after the swearing-in of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

The telecoms giant said it had created the so-called “scambaiter” tool in response to research which found that seven in 10 people wanted to get their own back on scammers, but did not want to waste their own time in doing so. BENGALURU: Fitch Ratings last Friday downgraded the long-term credit rating of Spirit Airlines to CC from CCC, bringing it below the low-cost carrier’s North America peers and warning that a near-term default appears probable. Earlier last week, the carrier said that it was in talks with creditors and was continuing to explore strategic alternatives to improve liquidity. It reported losses in five of the past six quarters, casting doubt on its capacity to address upcoming debt obligations. “Spirit now faces the risk that customers may increasingly opt to book away towards other carriers, fearing a potential bankruptcy, thus accelerating the company’s cash burn,” Fitch said in its report. The rating agency expects 2024 cash outflow to be around US$600mil, partly offset by proceeds from asset sales and compensation from Pratt & Whitney for being unable to use aircraft with engine issues.

The Tax Procedures (Amendment) Bill 2024 seeks to extend the tax amnesty period to June 2025 and allow taxpayers to offset overpayments or refunds due against tax obligations. The changes are meant to cure a situation like the current case, where there is a stalemate on the Division of Revenue Bill.
