Tim Matheson says he's lucky he never got too big into cocaine ... saying he played hard -- but, he worried too much about how the white stuff would affect his work to get addicted. Basically, Matheson says he wasn't a star and lived paycheck to paycheck ... and, he was acutely aware he could lose his income unless he continued to perform well. That said, Tim says he didn't completely shun the stuff ... but, he didn't use it as much as some of his contemporaries who were further up the callsheet. One of those contemporaries ... John Belushi -- who died of an overdose of cocaine and heroin in 1982 at just 33 years old. Matheson says part of the problem is that everyone in his generation was saying cocaine wasn't all that bad for you ... obviously, not the case.

LONDON: British mobile operator O2 has created an AI-powered tool that sounds like an elderly grandmother, keeping phone scammers on calls and away from the general public. The telecoms giant said it had created the so-called “scambaiter” tool in response to research which found that seven in 10 people wanted to get their own back on scammers, but did not want to waste their own time in doing so. It said the tool had been successful in keeping numerous scammers on calls for up to 40 minutes at a time and frustrated them with meandering stories and explanations about their tech use, as well as providing false personal information and made-up bank details. “The newest member of our fraud-prevention team, Daisy, is turning the tables on scammers – outsmarting and outmanoeuvring them at their own cruel game simply by keeping them on the line. “But crucially, Daisy is also a reminder that no matter how persuasive someone on the other end of the phone may be, they aren’t always who you think they are.

BENGALURU: Fitch Ratings last Friday downgraded the long-term credit rating of Spirit Airlines to CC from CCC, bringing it below the low-cost carrier’s North America peers and warning that a near-term default appears probable. Earlier last week, the carrier said that it was in talks with creditors and was continuing to explore strategic alternatives to improve liquidity. It reported losses in five of the past six quarters, casting doubt on its capacity to address upcoming debt obligations. “Spirit now faces the risk that customers may increasingly opt to book away towards other carriers, fearing a potential bankruptcy, thus accelerating the company’s cash burn,” Fitch said in its report. The rating agency expects 2024 cash outflow to be around US$600mil, partly offset by proceeds from asset sales and compensation from Pratt & Whitney for being unable to use aircraft with engine issues.

Botswana President Duma Boko during his inauguration at the National Stadium in Gaborone on November 8, 2024. But the curse of disputed polls, post elections protests and violence, however, still hangs over the continent’s electoral systems and democracy. The question is whether the country will get a new president from 10 other political parties that are also fielding candidates. Because pro-democracy activists from the west are no-longer pushing African countries to have people they support in power, the electoral process is now locally driven. “In Africa, incumbents don’t lose elections that easily,” said Anangwe as he paraphrased Uganda President Yoweri Museveni, who said: “How can you lose an election that you are managing, planning and financing?”
