The Star’s latest editorial strikes a nerve that every Kenyan knows is raw: the bursary system is broken. Instead, we have 290 constituency fiefdoms with 290 different sets of rules. A centralized system, like the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) or a capitation model, would ensure funds follow the learner. Instead, we have 290 constituency fiefdoms with 290 different sets of rules. It is a clarion call for the Ministry of Education to reclaim its mandate and end the bursary lottery once and for all.

President William Ruto revealed that he personally intervened to stop demolitions in the sprawling Mukuru Kwa Njenga informal settlement after chaotic scenes and protests erupted earlier in the week. The demolitions, which began on Tuesday, involved bulldozers and security forces moving into the settlement as residents sought to block the exercise. "Juzi niliona kuna watu wameenda kubomolea watu pale Mukuru, nikawaambia wasimamishe na wawache ujinga. Instead, he said the government must work with Kenyans, explain plans, and provide alternative settlement options. The high-tension demolitions, linked to an attempted expansion of feeder roads inside the settlement, triggered fierce responses from residents and local leaders.

Inefficiency here does not stay within the harbour walls—it ripples outward, inflating business costs, delaying cargo, and eroding regional competitiveness. It acknowledged a fundamental truth: port efficiency cannot be mandated from headquarters alone. For Mombasa to retain its premier status, efficiency must evolve from an aspiration into a measurable, sustained reality. What stands out in the leadership of Mr Wattanga and Cap Ruto is their recognition that institutional silos strangle port performance. Ultimately, this renewed commitment by KRA and KPA presents an opportunity to reset the narrative around the Port of Mombasa.
