Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Saturday, June 1, denied reports that the National Police Service (NPS) would train Haitian security officers in Kenya. Mudavadi, who doubles as the Foreign Cabinet Secretary, stated that the only deal Kenya had agreed on was deploying 1,000 police officers to Haiti. “It will not be secret but as we speak now, there are no such 2,000 people training in Kenya,” the PCS remarked. As such, Kenya would first send a small contingent of police officers who would join security officers from other countries. On the advice of top security officials, Mudavadi remarked Kenya would continue adding boots on the ground until the agreed 1,000 troops were realised.

According to Mr Zacchaeus Kwendo, the chairman of the Kaloleni Residents Welfare Association, descendants of the ex-soldiers live in uncertainty because of ownership issues. The Nairobi market with the same name, Mr Kwendo explained, was the garrison where the returning fighters stayed before they took up houses in Kaloleni. Mr Kwendo said there were no formal documents given to those who occupied the houses. We did not, however, find records indicating that the property was owned by the British War Council on War Memorial as the residents’ association claims. “These [Kaloleni] houses looked very expensive in those days,” said Mr Kwendo.

But there was little ‘relief’ in the ranks of South Africa’s former sole ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), that that gruesome manifestation of ‘cosmic unhappiness’ was avoided. No longer are there hordes among whom loyalty to the ANC may be relied upon, regardless of how poorly or corruptly it governs. The ANC’s much-desired 50-per cent-plus outcome gone, the former sole ruling party must now work out with which parties it can functionally operate. There would be no cooperation with the ANC, Zuma has declared, until Ramaphosa is out of the picture. Instead, the disgruntled have either given the ANC another chance – hence ANC support did not fall to sub-40 per cent, as some earlier polls had indicated was possible – or have opted for Zuma and his MK, as a radical alternative.

The world-renowned duo introduced me to a groundbreaking innovation that showcased how technology can transform our future relationship with water. This revelation fascinated me, not least, because of Kenya’s dire need for sustainable water solutions. This untapped potential offers a sustainable answer to our water woes, less vulnerable to immediate impacts of climate change compared to surface water. This is not about marketing a product, because there are indeed many ways of finding and extracting ground water. It is a call to action for all stakeholders—policymakers, community leaders, and citizens—to support and implement water solutions which integrate modern technology with traditional water management practices.

Michelle Obama and her mother Marian Robinson at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina on September 6, 2012. She married her husband, Fraser Robinson, in 1960, and the couple had two children, Michelle Obama and her brother Craig Robinson, both of whom were also raised on the South Side. "The trappings and glamour of the White House were never a great fit for Marian Robinson," the statement from her family said. She enjoyed sneaking out of the White House to run errands, such as popping to the drug store. In the Obamas' eight years at the White House from 2009 to 2017, "the only guest she made a point of asking to meet was the Pope," her family said.

South African vote tallying enters final stages with ANC on 40%Vote tallying in this week’s South African parliamentary election entered the final stages on Saturday, with the governing African National Congress (ANC) set to fall well short of a majority for the first time in 30 years of democracy. With results in from over 97% of the more than 23,000 polling stations in Wednesday’s vote, the ANC stood at 40.11%, a precipitous drop from the 57.50% it secured at the last national election in 2019. Political parties’ share of the vote will determine the number of seats they get in the National Assembly, which then elects the next president. That could still be the ANC’s leader, President Cyril Ramaphosa, as the former liberation movement will remain the biggest party. But Ramaphosa will be badly weakened and is likely to face calls to quit from opposition parties and critics in the deeply-divided ANC.

To help us appreciate the actual impact of these sanctions we turn to JOHN WALUGEMBE, Executive Director, Federation of SMEs.
