The future of the Bayfront looks a little brighter as the Erie Western Pennsylvania Port Authority and the Erie County Redevelopment Authority are moving forward in obtaining control of the former Erie Coke property at the foot of East Avenue. “We’re lucky to have such a partner like the redevelopment authority and experts in what they do and especially from the clean up, remediation side of things. Right now for us, it’s a great day to have a unanimous vote — our 11 board members in support of condemnation of the Erie Coke property,” said Julie Slomski, deputy executive director of the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority. “It’s really important to have local control, that was that motivating factor all the way through here,” said Tina Mengine, CEO of the Erie County Redevelopment Authority (ECRDA). Sister Pat Lupo, a leader from Hold Erie Coke Accountable, said she feels confident that public input will continue to play a role in the future of the site.

The boda boda industry has been a game changing means of transport since the early 2000s. Favourable government taxation policies on motorcycle imports put in place by the late former president Mwai Kibaki, led to a boom of the boda boda industry. Revoke advertising directive, Kenya Media Sector demandsMedia practitioners plan to sue the government if it does not rescind its recent directive ordering all ministries, state agencies, independent commissions and public universities to exclusively air their TV and radio advertisements on national broadcaster KBC. The Kenya Media Sector Working Group (KMSWG), a coalition of more than 20 different media associations, termed the recent directive issued by Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary, Edward Kisangani, as a threat Kenya’s free media. The media practitioners accused the government of systematically undermining Kenyans’ freedom of expression, media freedom and freedom to access information in blatant violation of the Constitution. The journalists said restricting public sector advertising to a single, state-controlled channel will effectively restrict the reach and influence of independent media. He defended the move, arguing it is in line with the Treasury circular issued dated July 10, 2015, which communicated the cabinet’s decision to centralise public sector advertising.

The ex-US special envoy for Haiti, Daniel Foote, has claimed that Kenya does not have the capacity or record for creating the types of security agencies that would successfully restore order in Haiti. Source: Getty ImagesFoote asserted that the country's law enforcement has struggled to maintain safety within the Nairobi city. He further contended that Kenya, being an unproven third-world country, is unsuitable for the task of restoring order in Haiti, emphasising the necessity for a nation with expertise in building police and security capacity. "If the US, England, France, Germany, Britain, and the EU do not take a lead in such a mission, it will be unfair. It is a great money-making opportunity for the countries but to be successful, any intervention needs to be led by a country that is good at creating police and security capacity, not an unproven third-world country," he said in a live interview.
