Last July, President Ruto said he was willing to send Kenyan police to help stem the deepening crisis.

Around 1,000 Kenyan police officers are set to be deployed to Haiti in a bid to combat raging gang violence. In January, a UN envoy said that gang violence in Haiti had reached "a critical point", with nearly 5,000 deaths reported last year. Along with the Kenyan officers, the Bahamas has committed 150 personnel. In the statement on Friday, Kenyan President William Ruto said he and Haiti's Prime Minister Ariel Henry had signed an agreement and discussed the next steps to enable the fast-tracking of the deployment. The student's body was retrieved from a ditch within Machakos Township on Thursday night. Machakos subcounty police commander Emmanuel Okanda said the incident happened at around 11.20 pm and was reported to Machakos police station as a sudden death incident. Okanda said the first year student was said to have left her rented house at Katoloni within Machakos Township for supper in a hotel in the area when the incident occurred. Kenya and Haiti on Friday signed an agreement on the deployment of 1,000 police officers to the Multi-National Security Support Mission to the Caribbean nation. The United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 2699 on October 2, 2023, authorising a multinational security support mission to Haiti. He added that there has also been extensive engagement with member States to translate global solidarity into concrete support for the Multinational Security Support Mission. He further noted that a petition was filed in court, which determined the need for a reciprocal instrument between Kenya and Haiti to enable the deployment. He reiterated Kenya’s commitment to contribute to the success of the multi-national mission.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has expressed confidence that peace will be restored in his country, despite the intensifying conflict between the government and violent gangs. In a public lecture at the United States International University (USIU) in Kenya on Friday, Ariel thanked Kenya for its solidarity with the people of Haiti. “We thank President William Ruto for accepting to intervene.
