Top Sports Ministry officials face scrutiny after allegedly defying a presidential directive, raising concerns over AFCON 2027 planning. Corruption concerns have emerged within the Ministry of Sports, Culture, and Heritage following new revelations that senior officials may have overlooked a presidential directive, potentially impacting the country’s preparations to co-host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). The directive came after it was revealed that some officials were using consultancy services as a conduit to siphon millions of shillings meant for AFCON preparations. President Ruto had ordered the cancellation of all private consultancy contracts on July 1, warning that the practice was escalating project costs unnecessarily. In defiance of that directive, insiders claim that senior ministry officials quickly reinstated consultants under questionable terms, taking advantage of a political vacuum created by the President's decision to dismiss all Cabinet Secretaries.

Political activist Morara Kebaso has been arrested, again, barely days after the courts cleared him of charges that saw him arrested less than a fortnight ago. He said his abductors, whom he suspects were police officers, questioned him on the ongoing impeachment of Mr Gachagua and his tweets on the subject. In the tweets, under the hashtag #KufaDerevaKufaMakanga Mr Rono had called for the removal of both Mr Gachagua and his boss, President William Ruto. Mr Gachagua claimed that the National Intelligence Service (NIS) was responsible for the abductions, which escalated during the recent anti-government demonstrations. That is what has happened and I have commended because I am a truthful person,” Mr Gachagua said.

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo now says Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is not remorseful over his utterances which are part of the impeachment charges he is facing. Speaking during the motion’s debate at the National Assembly on Tuesday, Amollo added that Gachagua is not a man looking to change. "I am convinced, having listened to DP Gachagua that he is not remorseful, he is not sorry for his utterances, and he is not prepared to change,” he said. “I have never talked about sharing resources, I have been talking about power sharing. For people to get what they deserve in sharing power according to this agreement,” Gachagua said.
Mr Gachagua is from the populous Western side and those salivating for the plum position from his backyard argue the seat is currently theirs and must remain there. He, like Mr Gachagua, hails from Nyeri County. According to Mbeere North MP Mr Geoffrey Ruku, the leaders argued that the absence of a centralized representative had hindered efforts to advance the region’s agenda. Nominated senator Esther Okenyuri however, warned against preempting the outcome of the impeachment against Mr Gachagua. Whether or not the President will reorganize his administration will depend on the outcome of the impeachment,” Ms Okenyuri said.

Once you append your signature to a Special Motion, you have crossed the rubicon and you cannot withdraw that signature,” he stated. The National Assembly currently has 345 members, 4 members shy of the constitutional 349 occupants.
