The workshop kick-starts activities for the EU co-funded project “Securing Land Rights for Women and Rural Communities in Southeastern Liberia”. The project is in support of women and rural communities’ Land Rights in Grand Gedeh, River Gee, and Sinoe counties in the Southeast of Liberia. Land rights are vital for economic justice for women, young people and communities who depend primarily on agriculture and the forest for their livelihoods. The workshop brings together the European Union as Donor, implementing partners (ActionAid Liberia, DEN – L and Forum Civ), strategic partners including Jappah Swen Gray Bernard (JSGB) Legal Services group and the Liberia Land Authority (LLA), as well as other stakeholders in the Land Rights sector. Dr. Nelson reminisce how few years ago, when he was in the Department of Student Services, he approached the alumni association asking it for a marching band and jerseys. According to Minister Cooper, agricultural must now shift from its current stage to a more advanced level that will promote human development. Speaking Tuesday at a forum for smallholder farmers and fishers, Minister Cooper said doing so must ensure access to safe and nutritious food for all. “The program is on track with discussion around the world on ensuring safe and notorious food,” Minister Cooper averred. She at the same time expressed delight over Liberia’s partnership with the European Union and others to ensure food security in Liberia. Meanwhile, Kpadeh noted that despite this initiative, Liberia must now move from smallholder farming to a larger scale.

Sacramento —Three former leaders of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) are applauding the United States Embassy in Liberia for strongly condemning the recent election of Senator Prince Y. Johnson as Chair of the Liberian Senate Committee on Defense and Intelligence. According to a press release, the former PUL leaders, Isaac D.E. Lawmakers in Liberia have a duty to responsibly demonstrate their commitment to the Liberian Constitution and personal moral rectitude as examples for a country which remains very divided,” the former PUL officials said. The Government of Liberia must refrain from being a “roadblock” to Constitutional protections and instead, seek judicial relief, for matters which it perceives injurious to its functions. FrontPageAfrica has not been able to fully ascertain why this act continues to remain the shadows. It was, however, not repealed before the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) that called for the establishment of such court. Amnesty in Other CountriesThe Act granting amnesty to all members of warring action in the 2003 Act of the Legislature is not unique to Liberia. Some famous Amnesties include the general amnesty granted by President of the United States of America, Andrew Johnson after the American Civil War (1861-April 9, 1865); the French amnesty of 1905, the Prussian amnesty, August 10, 1840, Napoleon’s amnesty of March 13, 1815 from which 13 eminent persons including Talleyrand were exempt.

Declaring the 2019 amendment unconstitutional, Nyanplu said a team of legal practitioners, to include Cllr. Kofi Woods and Law Professor Kabineh Ja’neh are all in readiness to seek legal redress to the citizens’ plight.

Monrovia – A leaked letter seen by this paper has put a new twist to the protracted saga involving Mr. Amos T.K Brosius and Judge Eva Mappy Morgan, Chief Judge of the Commercial Court at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia. The letter, which authentication has been duly established, was written by Associate Justice Yusuf D. Kaba, who is also chair of the Judiciary Inquiry Commission. Addressed to Chief Justice Francis Korkpor, the letter informs the Chief Justice about the outcome of the Judiciary Inquiry Committee’s investigation into the complaint filed by Mr. Brosius. The leaked letter has surfaced just a day ahead of the Supreme Court’s hearing into an appeal by Judge Mappy Morgan against the JIC recommendation that calls for her suspension for one year. Brosius’ assertions of MOTC’s operating “his” account is therefore wholly unfortunate and nothing more than a deliberate campaign to defame MOTC and probably Judge Mappy Morgan and the Liberian judiciary,” the release concluded.

MONROVIA – With financial support from the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights in Liberia, through the EU spotlight initiative, the Liberia NGOs Network is said to have complimented four of the five counties, conducting awareness on Sexual Gender Base Violence SGBV and Female Genetic Mutilation FGM and other human rights abuses in Liberia. Grand Cape Mont, Lofa, Nimba and Montserrado Counties are the five counties with Grand Geddeh remaining. LINNK begins its five counties activities in Grand Cape Mont County with a town hall meeting bringing together local authorities, citizens and police to dialogue on the issue of SGBV and FGM. During the dialogue, traditional leaders said, at times when police officers are carrying on their duties, they do things against traditional practices, and something they said is an abomination to the tradition of the country. Other issues discussed during the dialogue by participants and facilitators including stakeholders in the counties range from rape, sexual abuse, FGM early marriage/teen-age pregnancy and child abuse, among others.

Irrespective of the male dominance of the Liberian society, the work of few women has not gone unnoticed as the MacDella Cooper Foundation has honored several impactful women in Liberia. Vice President Taylor also continues to work with women and girls through multiple empowerment programs across the country. Also in rural Montserrado County, SHED is engaged in poultry production which is serving as source of livelihood for rural women who not have access to sources of income. The rural women are being trained in poultry production and provided chickens to run their own poultry and generate income for their livelihood.
