Capitol Hill, Monrovia – Amid Firestone Liberia’s anticipated decision to lay off 374 employees on July 26, the Independence Day of Liberia, the House of Representatives has invited the company’s management to give substantive reasons about its planed actions. Monrovia – As countries begin reopening their international borders despite a new spike in coronavirus cases, the European Union has temporarily lifted restrictions on non-essential travel into EU countries but Liberia, which has just over 500 active COVID-19 cases, is excluded. Algeria (with 17,808 confirmed cases), Morocco (14,771), Tunisia (1,221) and Rwanda (1,191) are the four African countries that made the list. They are joined by Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, New Zealand, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, and Uruguay as countries where none-EU citizens can travel from to the EU countries. Experts say the country’s coronavirus stats are significantly low as compare to many other African countries including the four included on the EU list. Minister Kollie said that because the company has not given proper clarification, Firestone is in violation of section 31. Monrovia – Senate Secretary Nanborlor Singbeh, one of the state witnesses in the ongoing trial of four former officials of the Central Bank of Liberia, has testified that a joint resolution was passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives for the printing of the first L$5 billion. Singbeh, the third state witness in the trial, on June 9 said that the resolution from the House of Representatives was adopted under the code 001/2016 while the Senate resolution was also adopted under the code 002. “The printing or authorization of the first 5 billion Liberian Dollars banknotes was made as far back as four years, from my recollection,” he said. On the question of whether there was any joint resolution by the House and Senate in respect to the replacement of the Liberian Dollars legacy bank notes, he said no. Following Singbeh’s testimony, the court adjourned the trial involving the former officials of CBL to Friday, June 10.

Monrovia – The U.S. Embassy in Liberia is proud to support Liberia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through INL’s Mitigating Local Disputes in Liberia (MLDL) program, INL sponsored a variety of radio programs nationwide and established handwashing and body temperature stations at border crossings and checkpoints in rural communities. This support helps Liberian County Security Councils inform Liberians about COVID-19 risks, increase personal safety measures to combat the spread of COVID-19, and protect Liberian security officials who engage with the public as they respond to the COVID-19 health emergency that has spread globally. In addition to funding the public awareness campaign, INL also donated hand sanitizer, buckets with faucets for hand washing, disinfectant soap, megaphones, and thermometers to Liberian County Security Councils and law enforcement personnel. This COVID-19 response program, valued at $32,000, was part of INL’s Mitigating Local Disputes in Liberia program and administered through The Kaizen Company.

Monrovia – The Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia (EPA) is expected to commence a two-day consultative meeting on Friday, July 10, 2020 to launch the development of Liberia’s Green Climate Fund (GCF) Country Program document. Over the past years, the Liberian Government through the EPA has been engaged with the GCF to support several climate development projects in Liberia. Also, the Climate Information Service project was developed and forwarded to the GCF Secretariat via the African Development Bank.
