Gbarnga, BONG COUNTY – More than two million voters scattered across Liberia’s 15 counties will in October elect a new president. In Nimba County, Senator Prince Yormie Johnson in 2017 played a key role in the victory of the CDC in the county. The president, in the 2017 presidential election, had an abysmal showing in the county, which as at that time was indisputably a Unity Party enclave. The defeat was resounding, as the then Bong County senator and vice standard bearer to CDC’s Weah, Jewel Howard-Taylor, held sway and had campaigned vigorously. The CDC took advantage of the division in the Unity Party which suffered a severe fracture following the executives of the Unity Party Bong Chapter’s mismanagement of the internal crisis.

Nimba is the home of MDR, UPists who kept sacrificing towards the upkeep of Nimba UP Chapter over the years are also in Nimba. The incumbent lawmaker being an expelled MDR lawmaker will result in MDR fighting itself should MDR puts up a candidate in District #4. A UP candidate in District #4 will accumulate all UP votes plus a portion of MDR votes. An MDR candidate would not do the same because MDR currently has an incumbent expelled lawmaker who will share their votes. An armyworm invasion that is rampaging in Bong County, destroying crops and contaminating drinking water sources, has also attacked farmers in Nimba and Gbarpolu counties, the Ministry of Agriculture has said. Farmers in the two Bong districts -- Zota and Jorquelleh Districts -- informed the public about the armyworms invasion over the weekend. The ministry did not provide information on the level of damage the armyworm invasion has caused in the affected areas. However, twelve of Liberia's 15 counties have experienced such worm invasion -- a natural and periodic occurrence in Liberia since 2009. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, armyworms are migratory pests, with adult pests having the capacity to fly over 30 kilometers while drifting through air currents.

Koijee specifically targeted Samuel Wlue, Minister of Transport, and Musa Dean, Minister of Justice, for their alleged misconduct. GANTA, Nimba County – a group of government officials and lawmakers of Nimba County in support of President George Weah’s re-election bid have been accused of coercing local government officials of the county to follow their footsteps in supporting Weah and Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor. Despite the warning, some of the officials were still hesitant to sign, and as a result, the organizers rescheduled another meeting to be held in Karnplay, Nimba County, FPA gathered. He acknowledged that Rep. Gwaikolo attended the occasion based on an invitation accorded him by the local officials. A lawmaker has no right to go and engage or intimidate local officials that fall within the executive to vote for a presidential candidate. Ignoring the ConstitutionThe Constitution of Liberia mandates that most of these local officials should be elected, but successive governments continue to ignore this important constitutional provision, giving the president undue power to appoint these local officials, thereby subjecting them to serve at his/her discretion.

Some still hold the opinion – that being the ex-wife of former President Taylor, she should not have been elevated to this high office. In this new role as Vice President, the Liberian Constitution provided the basis for her engagements – stating that: “the Vice President shall assist the President in the discharge of his functions and shall perform other duties as may be delegated by the President”. However, the National Secretary General of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Jefferson Tamba Koijee, has highlighted a concerning issue regarding the imposition of graduation fees that undermines the true intent of the pro-poor educational policy. Koijee, however, argues that imposing graduation fees on students after lifting the burden of tuition fees contradicts the spirit of the tuition-free policy.
