The Ministry of Information, in a press statement, said that the returnees are expected to arrive at Kotoka International Airport at 1500 hours GMT. This new repatriation effort follows a series of successful repatriations in 2023, which included the returnees of 169 Ghanaians in October and 134 individuals from Misrata earlier that same month. These initiatives were carried out under the Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) program. These brought about a total of 629 Ghanaians who will benefit from the voluntary humanitarian return (VHR) in 2023.

Ghana’s Embassy in Tripoli in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration has today repatriated a total of 165 Ghanaians from Libya to Ghana. According to the Ministry of Information, they are scheduled to arrive at the Kotoka International Airport at 1500 hours GMT. Meanwhile, the Embassy and the IOM in October last year facilitated the repatriation of the fourth batch of 169 Ghanaians from Tripoli to Accra under the Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) programme for the year 2023. A third batch of returnees of 134 Ghanaian nationals were repatriated from the city of Misrata, voluntarily to Ghana, on 10th October, 2023 under the same program. This brings the total number of Ghanaian nationals who had benefitted from the VHR programme in 2023 to 629.

The bodies of 13 Sudanese migrants have been recovered and 27 others are missing after a boat sank on Wednesday off the coast of Tunisia having set off from Sfax, a Tunisian judicial official said on Thursday. The boat was carrying 42 people, all of them Sudanese, and two people were rescued, Judge Farid Ben Jha said. Tunisia replaced Libya as North Africa’s main departure point for people fleeing poverty and conflict elsewhere in Africa and across the Middle East in the hope of a better life in Europe. The country has seen a record wave of migration since last year, with frequent catastrophes involving boats sinking off its coast as they carry migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa hoping to reach Italy. In 2023 the Tunisian coast guard recovered the bodies of nearly 1,000 migrants drowned off its coast, Tunisian officials said, more than in any other year.

Libya’s state National Oil Corporation announced today that its subsidiary, Mellitah Oil and Gas Company, was able, today, to resume exploration for well A1 in the Abu Attifel field. The NOC said the results of initial tests were a production of 2,773 barrels of oil per day, up from 700 barrels. It said this resumed exploration well comes in implementation of its strategic plan to increase production.

As part of IOM’s Voluntary Humanitarian Return Assistance Programme, this support is made possible thanks to the Migrant Protection, Return and Reintegration Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa (MPRR-SSA) funded by the European Union. In 2023 alone, IOM supported the safe return of 629 Ghanaians (555 men, 58 women and 16 children) via four charter flights from Libya. We are proud to have supported 5143 Ghanaians (4449 men, 715 women) who have voluntarily returned under the programme since 2017,” said IOM Ghana Chief of Mission, Ms. Fatou Diallo Ndiaye. The migrants were excited to be greeted by Kofi Kinaata, who took the opportunity to reaffirm his commitment as IOM Ghana Goodwill Ambassador. Libya’s state National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced yesterday that as part of its sustainable development plans for 2024-2025, it is launching 35 projects in the oil producing Wahat oases region (Awjla – Jalo – Ijkhira) in southeast Libya. It said these will include health, education, electricity network, improved infrastructure and entertainment projects.
