The Attorney General’s Office announced Thursday that it had detained the Chairman of Mabrouk Oil Operations Company, pending the case. The Mabrook chairman is accused of signing a technical support contract with a specialised foreign company for US$ 2 million even though he was advised that the technical support was not needed. The Attorney General’s Office reported that the investigator had inferred that the Mabrook chairman had ignored the recommendation of the Oil Reservoir Engineering Consultant, by deliberately concluding a technical support contract worth US$ 2 million despite his knowledge of the specialists’ recommendation. This, the Attorney General’s Office said led to financial damage to Mabrook Oil Operations as a result of paying the price of the contract despite the absence of the need for the contract. Cities along Libya’s western coast have seen a dramatic spike in illegal migrant boats attempting the perilous sea journey to Europe over the past few weeks. This surge has led to accusations that government security forces under interim Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh are actively enabling and profiting from human trafficking operations. “Dbeibeh’s Coast Guard commanders are working hand-in-glove with traffickers; there is no doubt about it,” said local activist Salah al-Din. As political divisions continue to paralyze Libya, oversight of security forces has broken down, allowing traffickers to operate with impunity. “When you have underpaid security forces and a lack of accountability, it creates conditions for exploitation,” said analyst Sami Faitori.

By aligning with Haftar, Russia not only gains a strategic ally but also a platform from which it can influence the region’s dynamics. Yet, across Western capitals, there is still a palpable dismissive narrative that continues to frame Wagner and Russia’s presence in Libya as mere opportunism. In conclusion, Russia’s tactical efforts to fortify its military presence in eastern Libya cannot be viewed in isolation by Europe. To counter the growing impact of Russia’s influence in Libya, Europe needs to display geopolitical sagacity.

Who’s that walking up Downing Street? He is now foreign secretary, and after his full-spectrum triumph in Libya it will certainly be interesting to see what Mr Failed State achieves in that role. Is there such a thing as an emergency foreign secretary? Many will feel David wouldn’t even deserve a comeback as an ITV press officer, his only previous job outside politics. Ultimately, we now have an unelected foreign secretary appointed by an unelected prime minister, and are being asked to consider the mood as fresh.
