Russia took over Crimea in 2014, and during the current war has expanded its presence there. Occasional acts of sabotage and other attacks against Russian military and other facilities on the peninsula have occurred since, with the Kremlin blaming Ukraine. The Kremlin wants Kyiv to acknowledge Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea and also recognize September’s annexation of the Ukrainian provinces of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine has rejected those demands and won’t hold talks with Russia until Moscow’s troops pull back from all occupied territories. The Ukrainian military said Russian forces over the previous 24 hours launched 32 airstrikes, two missile strikes and 40 attacks from multiple rocket launchers.

This month 20 years ago — March 20, to be precise — the West attacked Iraq, accusing it of having Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) which later turned out to be nothing but a pack of lies. As if the destruction of Iraq and thousands of deaths of its people owing to the Western invasion were not enough, endless sanctions by the US and Europe weakened Iraq to unimaginable level. There is no peace in Iraq for which the US had invaded the country. Iraq needs justice, and so does Libya where, again, the West attacked a resource-rich country on the basis of lies. Bush, Blair and others involved in the destruction of Iraq, Libya, Syria and Palestine need to be held accountable for the death of thousands of Arab Muslims.

Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada told reporters that North Korea launched a possible intercontinental ballistic missile on a high angle. Foreign experts debate whether North Korea has developed warheads small and light enough to fit on its more advanced missiles. South Korean officials say North Korea has not been responding to South Korean calls on a set of cross-border inter-Korean hotlines for about a week. South Korea pulled its companies out of Kaesong in North Korea in 2016 following a North Korean nuclear test, removing the last remaining major symbol of cooperation between the rivals.
