Speaking at a Youth Forum held in his city of Misrata yesterday, Tripoli based Libyan prime minister, Abdel Hamid Aldabaiba, distanced himself from the comments made recently by his Interior Minister about adopting a hard line on enforcing public morals. Aldabaiba made it clear that there is no need for new policy on the enforcement of public morals as the overwhelming majority of Libyans are conservative by nature. We are far from (the need for) that, and we are with public freedoms and rights’’.‎He assured that the new decree on public morals does not affect freedoms and liberties. Aldabaiba stressed that the public should focus on what is said in the decree – implying not what his Interior Minister had said or implied. Those males and females who publicly socialise are not deemed to be free to do what they want in the public sphere if it conflicts with perceived public morals.

The speech comes as the war saw a significant escalation this week, with Russia firing a new kind of ballistic missile at Ukraine on Thursday. “In 2024, Ukraine is no longer facing Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired Zaluzhny in February after rising tensions between the two on how the war in Ukraine should be fought, as well as Zaluzhny's growing popularity, which made him a potential political threat. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the missiles would be used against any nation arming Ukraine, a clear warning to the US and UK, which have greenlit Kyiv’s use of their long-range weapons in Russia.

North Africa’s main oil producer, Libya, is again making headlines, mainly in light of OPEC’s ongoing market struggles. A potential conflict between Libya’s LNA-backed powers and European oil and gas operators presents an opening for Russian interests. With around 3,000 mercenaries in Libya, Moscow views the country as a potential hub for further expansion into Africa. Establishing a stronghold in Libya aligns with former Soviet cooperation agreements and advances Moscow’s goal of targeting Europe’s energy supply. Moscow appears intent on using eastern Libya’s oil and gas regions as a gateway into Africa.

The elections, which saw a 74 percent turnout, were seen as a crucial step for Libya's democratic future and stability.
