Malaysia plans to go into the endemic phase by the end of October, which is when it hopes 100 percent of its adults, or 71.6 percent of its total population, will be fully vaccinated. Many aspects of work, play, love, comfort and gatherings took place online and experts do not see much of it changing. “Now even the makcik and pakcik, our senior citizens, know how to use the (smartphone and go online),” he said. While it may be a more isolated life, experts say it does not need to be more lonely. He also said people should be fully vaccinated in order to return to society and those who decided against getting the vaccine should be prepared to be sidelined and refused service.

How do you build a bridge three times higher than the Penang Bridge, which is at 28m?” asked Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) chief executive officer Datuk Sasedharan Vasudevan. Sasedharan questioned if suspending the middle span of such a bridge at a height of 100m was possible. On the possibility of using a drawbridge mechanism at the middle span, Sasedharan said this was a “non-starter”. The bridge plan is expected to cost half the RM6.3bil cost estimate of the undersea tunnel. Many Penangites spoke about the ferry service, which they described as better than the proposed undersea tunnel or elevated bridge.

AFTER months of on-and-off lockdowns, the hotel sector is seeing some signs of life, with quite a number already receiving bookings especially for the school holidays. Of the 2,300 members in the Malaysia Budget Hotel Association, about half have closed down, while an estimated RM3bil in losses has been incurred by the budget hotel sector, said president Emmy Suraya Hussein. So far, Iconic Hotel Penang has incurred a loss of RM5mil. The year-end “holiday” mindset and pent-up demand will likely set the momentum for the domestic hotel sector after the restrictions over the last 18 months. How long can the hotel sector hold out is a big question now.

(Sept 27): Iceland’s claim of electing Europe’s first female-majority legislature was retracted due to a miscalculation after the centrist ruling coalition added to its majority. Predictions failed to pan out that Jakobsdottir’s coalition would struggle in the face of calls from the left for higher health-care spending and worries over climate change in the North Atlantic island nation. Instead, the grouping won a fresh endorsement from voters after getting the Iceland’s tourism-dependent economy through a pandemic-induced slump. Iceland is the only Nordic country that hasn’t bounced back to pre-crisis levels of activity after its economy plunged 6.6% in 2020. “I feel like those views have won in these elections and are part of my party’s great victory.“

PETALING JAYA: Information circulating online claiming that individuals aged 70 and up need to surrender their driving license to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is false, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic). “Actually, Section 30 of the Road Transport Act 1987 allows drivers to voluntarily surrender their license due to unsatisfactory health conditions which may endanger other road users,” said the Transport Minister in a Facebook post on Sunday (Sept 26). He added that denying senior citizens a driving license is the last resort and referred to a statement he made on Saturday (Sept 25). On Saturday, Dr Wee called for a holistic approach to be adopted to determine the driving ability of individuals, including the need for mobility and other socio-economic factors aside from the age factor alone. He added that it was also the responsibility of individuals with declining health to surrender their licenses and said that he hopes that all stakeholders will create an effective and inclusive plan for the public.

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): All parties, including social media influencers, must help ensure delivery of accurate information on the implementation of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) during the country's transition to the endemic phase of Covid-19, said Tan Sri Annuar Musa (pic). The Communications and Multimedia Minister said influential people are responsible for educating the public by presenting information with an accurate narrative on government initiatives in NRP. "Educating the public on the endemic phase is important because sometimes people still do not understand... we must convey in a simple way in communicating. "Dissemination of information can also be done by influencers who have many followers, if he (or she) also takes on the role to remind the people about the transition to the endemic phase as community empowerment," he said. Apart from the use of conventional media such as television and radio, Annuar said dissemination mediums including social media platforms such as TikTok and Facebook could be used to disseminate information effectively, thus educating the public about the transition to the endemic phase.
