(Feb 23): After boasting for months about its preferential trade deal with US President Donald Trump, the UK is at risk of becoming the biggest loser in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down his global tariffs. The UK will see the largest increase as a result, followed by Italy and Singapore, according to Global Trade Alert, while Brazil, China and India stand to benefit the most. UK officials are now anxiously trying to persuade the US administration to exempt it from the higher rate. Trump’s new tariff regime, imposed under Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act, can apply for a maximum of 150 days unless Congress extends it. The UK has already expended significant diplomatic capital to extract preferential treatment from the White House.

KOTA KINABALU: The number of flood victims placed in temporary evacuation centres in Sabah, as of 8pm on Sunday (Feb 22), continues to rise to 3,427 people from 1,449 families compared to 3,266 people from 1,401 families at 4pm earlier the same day. In a statement, the State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said that all the victims from three districts, namely Pitas, Paitan and Tawau, have been placed in 27 centres. Pitas recorded the highest number of victims, with 2,171 people, followed by Paitan (1,011 people) and Tawau (245 people). The floods in the three districts have affected 70 villages, but no deaths have been reported. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasts thunderstorms in several areas of Sabah's interior on Sunday.

PETALING JAYA: PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has given a glowing tribute to Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for his services and sacrifices while helming Perikatan Nasional (Perikatan) as its chairman. In a statement issued hours after the appointment of PAS vice-president and Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar to the post, Abdul Hadi said that PAS remains committed to the coalition. Abdul Hadi had previously declined to succeed Muhyiddin, citing health issues, after the latter resigned on Jan 1 following calls from several PAS leaders for him to step down. KEPALA BATAS: A fire victim, whose house was destroyed along with three other homes in Kampung Permatang Krai Besar here early this morning, did not expect that the explosion she heard while warming up food for sahur was actually a fire. Jamilah Ismail, 58, said she woke up at 4.40am, initially hearing a sound like an explosion outside her house, but brushed it off as people arguing. "However, when I opened the door, I was shocked to see a large blaze destroying three houses next door. "The fire spread quickly, and within 10 minutes, everything was destroyed, and there was no time to do anything. "The youngest child, who was sleeping in the front room, began to feel the heat before seeing the fire spreading.

KYIV, Feb ⁠22 (Reuters) - One police officer ⁠was killed and 24 other ‌people were wounded after several explosive devices detonated at midnight in Lviv, ​in western Ukraine, ⁠the National Police ⁠said on Sunday. "It has been ⁠preliminarily established ‌that homemade explosive devices detonated," the ⁠police said on the Telegram messaging ​service. The ‌police said that the ⁠first explosion ​occurred after a patrol crew arrived at the suspected ⁠scene of a shop ​break-in, while the second explosion occurred a little later. The mayor of ⁠Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, called the incident a terrorist act. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on X ​that police ⁠had detained a suspect, but ​did not provide ‌further details.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a former telcommunications company director for providing bribes of about RM8mil to a bank’s group managing director for loan approval. According to an MACC source, the man, in his 50s, was arrested around 12.30pm when he showed up to provide his statement at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya. "The suspect is believed to have provided the bribe in 2012 along a Joint Completion Guarantee containing fake details to fulfil the conditions of a loan of about RM400mil to finance a fibre optic project,” they said. Meanwhile, MACC Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the arrest when contacted and said that the case is being investigated under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 and Section 471 of the Penal Code. The suspect will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Criminal Sessions Court on Monday (Feb 23), he added.

PETALING JAYA: Newly appointed Perikatan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar says that he aims to create a political consensus for all Malaysians across diverse religions, races, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds. The Perikatan supreme council unanimously appointed Ahmad Samsuri to the post on Sunday (Feb 22), succeeding Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who resigned on Jan 1. Ahmad Samsuri noted that this foundation enabled the coalition to secure a significant number of seats in the 15th General Election. In 2023, Terengganu Perikatan under his leadership secured a clean sweep of all 32 seats in the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly. Academically, Ahmad Samsuri earned a PhD in Aeroengine Ignition and Combustion from the University of Leeds in 2001.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is monitoring the implications of a recent US Supreme Court ruling that struck down tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, with the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) now reviewing the matter. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said MITI is coordinating with both Washington and Asean partners to determine the next course of action. Following the ruling, Trump said he would impose a uniform 10% tariff on all imports under a separate legal authority, adding that the decision left him “more powerful”. Malaysia and the United States signed a reciprocal trade agreement during Trump’s visit to Kuala Lumpur last October for the Asean Summit. The deal maintained tariffs at 19%, with certain products eligible for zero tariffs under agreed partner-trade lists.

PETALING JAYA: A dispute over a parking space turned violent when a man allegedly slashed another with a knife at the Seri Melaka Flats in Cheras, leaving the victim with a three-centimetre wound on his left hand. Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Rosdi Daud said police received a report from a male complainant on Feb 20 regarding the incident. “The suspect then slashed the complainant, causing an injury to his left hand,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Feb 21). ACP Mohd Rosdi said the suspect has been remanded for four days from Feb 21 to Feb 24 to assist in investigations. “The motive of the incident is believed to stem from dissatisfaction over a parking issue,” he said.

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commisioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has given his statement to the special committee investigating his ownership of 17.7 million shares bought for RM1.416mil in Velocity Capital Partner Bhd. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the Special Investigation Committee convened on Thursday (Feb 19) to record Azam's explanation about the shares. KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu vice president Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee was dropped as the party's representative on the Perikatan Nasional supreme council hours before he was scheduled to attend a meeting at PAS headquarters here. Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali signed a letter dated Friday (Feb 20) stating that Kiandee would be replaced by party vice presidents Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Datuk Radzi Jidin. The Beluran MP, however, remains a party vice president. "I received the letter by Whatsapp from him and he probably received the letter at about the same time." Kiandee's removal from the Perikatan supreme council is the latest in the axing of those aligned to former Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.
