KUALA LUMPUR (June 27): With the number of people over 65 years in Malaysia projected to triple from two million at present to over six million by 2040, Malaysia needs to learn from Japan on how to manage its ageing population. Ras Adiba had asked the ambassador about what Malaysia can learn from Japan's experience in managing its ageing citizens who are expected to represent 35.3% of the country's population by 2040. “Ageing population issue is one variable that I really want to explore on how we can work together. “When it comes to the ageing population, according to the World Bank statistics, you’re 50 years younger than Japan. Takahashi said Malaysia and Japan have enjoyed excellent bilateral ties since the establishment of Malaysia’s Look East Policy four decades ago.

LONDON: Central banks need to pay more attention to how the money supply affects inflation, the economy and their own policy-transmission mechanisms, Bank of England (BoE) chief economist Huw Pill says. Speaking separately at Chatham House in London, Haskel said that monetary and fiscal policy were not to blame for the current inflation shock. “If you’re going to look for a culprit for current inflation, at least in Europe, I do not believe we should be looking towards reckless monetary or fiscal policy,” Haskel said. “While monetarism remains unfashionable in academic and central banking circles, perhaps it has contributed more to the past, present and potential future of monetary policy than we conventionally admit,” he said. The use QE “inevitably begs the question of whether monetary quantities have re-asserted themselves in the conduct, transmission and communication of monetary policy.”Pill said the BoE would unwind its £895bil (RM4.8 trillion) of asset purchases under QE carefully, which would allow it to make the interest rate the main tool of monetary policy.

Malaysia is indeed such an economy, open to trade to a fault and yes, it is small. The other source of concern for Malaysians are interest rates. The key strategy to combat inflation is to raise interest rates, making it more expensive for borrowers. Without a deep currency market, the currency would fall to high volatility and be subject to predatory attacks, at the country’s expense.

Egypt had contracted to buy 180,000 tonnes of wheat from India, less than previously agreed at 500,000 tonnes, the supply minister said on Sunday. Commodity funds were net buyers of CBOT corn, soybean, soyoil and soymeal futures contracts last Friday.

KUALA LUMPUR (June 26): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Sunday expressed concern over the increasing number of bankrupts among youths. In view of the situation, Ismail Sabri said he will hold discussions with Bank Negara Malaysia governor Tan Sri Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus on measures to curb the problem. "I am concerned when looking at the latest statistics on bankruptcy among youths and I am also concerned that the numbers will rise further. Ismail Sabri said the closure of several economic sectors increased the country's unemployment rate to 5.3% in May 2020, the highest monthly (unemployment) rate ever recorded. This year alone, Ismail Sabri said, the government is targeting up to 600,000 job opportunities, with an allocation of RM4.8 billion, through the Malaysian Family Job Guarantee initiative.

Instead, he said the situation should be addressed with more effective methods including those announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob regarding electricity tariffs and chicken prices. He also said maintaining the price of RON95 petrol at RM2.05 per litre is also one of the measures to help the people cope with the rising cost of living. He encouraged those with ideas that can help the people deal with the issue to forward them to the government and the Prime Minister. If she has an idea, she should meet the Prime Minister and tell him her ideas," he added.

She said that a meeting between DBKK, dog lovers and non-governmental organisations on June 14 had discussed these matters.
