"We've got Leigh Beer's family obviously they're going to have a son brother, friend go away into jail for a while. The following year, while waiting to be sentenced, Beer, who had been drinking, backhanded his son when he would not go to bed - splitting his lip. When sentenced in 2013, the judge noted alcohol was a common denominator in Beer's offending, jailed him for two years and issued a strike warning against him. Beer will be sentenced for Field's murder in September.

A woman took her boyfriend to New Zealand’s Disputes Tribunal after he failed to take her to the airport, causing her to miss a flight to a concert she had planned to attend. The woman involved had arranged to be picked up by the man, who she was in a relationship with, but he never arrived to collect her. The woman lodged a claim with the tribunal, which said that, in her view, the agreement for a ride to the airport constituted a legally binding agreement. Southern Heritage Trust chairperson Jo Galer said it was shocking to discover the Edmund Anscombe-designed house on Stuart Street will be torn down to make way for apartments. Galer said the Southern Heritage Trust, along with close to 100 others including Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, made submissions against the application. "The tree was the only thing that was marked on the district plan as having any protection and yet this architectural masterpiece by Edmund Anscombe had not been protected." A Dunedin City Council spokesperson said the home at 284 Stuart Street was not a protected heritage building under the city's district plan heritage schedule. The Dunedin City Council on Tuesday voted to endorse a LGNZ remit, proposed by Gisborne District Council, to mitigate the deterioration of unoccupied buildings and address the issue of "demolition by neglect".
