Strawberries prices have jumped in recent days; a punnet of strawberries was $5 at Woolworths in Whangarei’s Regent on Sunday but had increased to $7 by Tuesday evening on the Countdown online shopping site. Pak’nSave in Whangarei was selling strawberries for $5.99. She stated: “This year, growers have had 25% fewer strawberry plants in the ground and the price of fresh produce will always be impacted by supply and demand – when supply is low, the prices are higher. “So when everyone tries to get their favorite berry in the week before Christmas, then this demand against finite supply drives prices at the supermarket up majorly. Most people don’t notice or comment on the fact that berry prices crash immediately after Christmas because even though supply will be similar to the previous week, demand drops through the floor.”Source: stuff.co.nz

2023 is tracking to be one of the top three hottest years on record for Aotearoa New Zealand. NIWA meteorologist Tristan Meyers says 2022 was our warmest year on record, surpassing the record set the year before in 2021. “Last month didn’t add to the record books, with it being the 34 th-warmest November since NIWA’s seven station temperature series began in 1909. “We’ll be confirming this in our annual climate summary issued early next month.”In the meantime, Meyers says the Christmas outlook is a mixed bag. “Showers and areas of rain look to affect the North Island, while a few showers are possible for the Southern Alps and east of the South Island.

The Government doubled down on its tax cut plans in the mini budget today – but in doing so demonstrated the need for real tax reform, according to Tax Justice Aotearoa. “Paradoxically, the cutting of programmes such as Smokefree in return for relatively small tax cuts for most people demonstrates the collective power of taxation and the ability of public expenditure to address societal needs. “We are losing something of significant benefit to society and the people who will get most benefit from the tax cuts are a small group of wealthy individuals and landlords. “These tax changes are merely storing up problems for the future at a time when most economists are saying we need to raise more revenue. https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/money/300981634/forget-tax-cuts-we-need-to-face-up-to-paying-more-tax-economists-say“We need to properly tax wealth and consider taxes that target environmental and health issues, instead of backing away from them,” says Glenn Barclay.
