Nigeriens on Sunday welcomed the lifting of some of the sanctions that were imposed on the country by West Africa’s regional bloc following last year’s coup. The Economic Community of West African States suspended trade and imposed tough sanctions last July, after Niger’s president, Mohamed Bazoum, was ousted in a military coup. And on Saturday ECOWAS announced that it was lifting some of the sanctions, including a no-fly zone, border closures and asset freezes. The Nigerien authorities had not yet commented on the lifting of sanctions. Along with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea – which have also been rocked by coups – Niger was suspended from ECOWAS.

A security guard has died after he was allegedly punched in the head during an altercation at a hotel in Sydney’s south, and a man charged with assault occasioning death. Officers found a man, believed to be aged in his 30s, unconscious outside the hotel. Police were told the security guard was allegedly punched to the head by a patron after an altercation. “It’s alleged the patron had been requested to leave the hotel prior to the assault,” NSW police said in a statement on Sunday. A 31-year-old man has since been arrested and taken to Sutherland police station, where he was charged with assault occasioning death.

Qatar has declined a request made by Nigeria to hold a business and investment forum (BIF) when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visits the Middle East country in March 2024.
