A Russian “guided bomb” has hit a blood transfusion centre in north-eastern Ukraine, killing two people and injuring four, Ukrainian officials say. President Volodymyr Zelensky posted an image of the building on fire as a result of Saturday night’s attack around Kupiansk, in the Kharkiv region. The area was liberated during a Ukrainian counter-offensive last September but comes under missiles and shelling daily. But local officials later posted the same image adding details about the attack on what they described as a non-residential building. He also said that on Saturday Russia separately carried out a missile attack, targeting an aeronautical company run by group Motor Sich in the western Khmelnytskyi region.

Though their first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage, South African players never gave up the fight and were always a threat in the game but Dutch goalkeeper, Daphne van Domselaar, was equal to everything Banyana Banyana fired at her. Japan are also through to the last-16 and would face the winner of the heavyweight clash between defending champions USA and Sweden, the Independent reports. The USA are looking vulnerable after scraping through Group E, and the defending champions going out at this stage would leave the tournament wide open.

Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie, charged with the task of shutting out England in Monday’s last-16 tie in Brisbane, is the only one who can claim both. Chiamaka Nnadozie falls to her knees after Nigeria claim a major scalp at the Women’s World Cup. Not every mum would do what she has done, so that I can play football. His statement was always that ‘women don’t play football’. He now knows woman can play football and achieve anything in life.”For the woman adjudged to have the safest hands in African football, anything is possible.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has announced that the country’s civil aviation sector is scheduled to undergo a comprehensive safety audit by the International Civil Aviation Organisation by the end of August 2023, the PUNCH learnt. According to the NSIB boss, the upcoming ICAO audit held great significance, as it would provide valuable insights into the safety status of Nigeria’s aviation sector. All I can say is that Nigeria as a country has one of the best safety records because safety is measured in various ways. “It is measured by the number of accidents, measured by number of fatal accidents, measured by the number of serious incidences and occurrences. It is the only way you can assess any country and we are doing our own audit in August.

As one of seven teams to have qualified for all nine Women’s World Cups, Nigeria will not regard themselves as underdogs against England on Monday. But I hope – and expect – Wiegman will stick with a system that uses all the best attributes of England’s players. They next face a Nigeria team possessing top-class forwards in Racing Louisville’s Uchenna Kanu and, particularly, Barcelona’s trophy‑laden Asisat Oshoala. That said, Katie Zelem, Walsh’s replacement against China, played smartly and sensibly, cleverly backing up and protecting James in a way that reflects their former relationship as Manchester United teammates. The solution is to ensure England’s press is well executed and sufficiently on the front foot to pin Alozie and Plumptre into corners, potentially nullifying their threat.

The association made this known in a circular titled, ‘Notice of nationwide mass protests and picketing by NARD,’ and addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Olufunso Adebiyi. The FG also directed the hospitals to maintain an attendance register for all resident doctors willing to work. “This has become necessary to press home our demands which have been largely neglected by our parent ministry and the Federal Government.

Who are we to tell them how they should conduct their affairs and whom they should prefer as their rulers? Plus, in Nigeria, the tide of public opinion is overwhelmingly against any form of Nigeria-led military aggression to restore civilian rule in Niger. “France can give up Mali and Burkina Faso, but Niger is the only country it will not give up without a fight,” he said. Niger has the highest number of land cruisers per capita in Africa.”What Professor Falola describes isn’t exclusive to Niger, of course. I thought President Tinubu was following in Abdulrazaq’s lead and was going to write a full-length column to commend this.

The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), representing the collective voice of the Muslim Ummah in the country, has expressed its deep concern and censure of power from a democratically elected President Bozoum through a military coup in the Niger Republic. “The JNI, therefore, commends the efforts so far undertaken by the Nigerian government, particularly the initiation of a dialogue process aimed at resolving the crisis in Niger Republic. It said the interlaced landscape of the northern states of Nigeria and the Republic of Niger necessitates a more circumspect and thoughtful action and/or approach. Thus, it posited that with several Nigerian states sharing borders with Niger Republic, military intervention could have unintended consequences that may impact the peace and stability of both nations. “Lastly, the JNI reiterates its commitment to promoting unity, understanding, and cooperation among all Muslims and communities.

During the ministerial screening, Senate President Godswill Akpabio humorously told ex-Governor Simon Lalong that he would be biased if he asked him any question. In a light-hearted exchange, Lalong praised Akpabio as an “uncommon Senate President” and thanked the lawmakers for their support during the campaign. Akpabio acknowledged their previous roles in the campaign and stated his faith in Lalong’s integrity and capacity. Following Lalong’s responses, he received endorsements from AVM Napoleon Bali (rtd), representing Plateau South, and Simon Mwadkwon, the Senate Minority Leader representing Plateau North. After losing his senatorial bid, Lalong was given the opportunity to take a bow, indicating his approval for the ministerial position.

This tale sparked a question: will we too be forced to resort to begging for money to meet our basic needs? We must strive to build a safety net that ensures basic needs are met for everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
