The presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, says it will be ‘extremely weird’ of him to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Obi, who spoke through his aide, Tai Obasi, also denied planning a demonstration ahead of today’s inauguration of the incoming President. They are not happy about how everything was manipulated against Obi who has given them so much hope. But it will be extremely weird for him to attend a ceremony of a man whose election victory he is challenging in court. I can’t confirm if he receives an invitation to the swearing-in ceremony.

The former governor of Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, Mr Tinubu, 71, was sworn in as Nigeria’s president in Abuja, the capital city, in the presence of thousands of Nigerians and several heads of governments. Even with his election still being contested in court by opposition parties, Mr Tinubu has pledged to reunite the country. Some analysts also say the promises made by Mr Tinubu and the hope they bring are reminiscent of when Mr Buhari was first elected president in 2015 as a former military head of state. Dr Seun Kolade, a Nigerian development expert and associate professor at De Montfort University in the UK, said: “No Nigerian president has come into office with so much goodwill from citizens as President Buhari, but no other president has squandered it as quickly as President Buhari did. Mr Tinubu must also act quickly and decisively to tackle Nigeria’s security crises with the country already in a critical situation, analysts said.

It is within this context that the burgeoning descent into lawlessness in the country deserves to be thoroughly interrogated. For instance, how does anyone explain the recent reports of the apprehension of two middle-aged men by the Ondo State Police Command for raping and killing two elderly women in Ondo State? Farm hands who evidently have enough economic and financial issues to contend with committing rape and murder? The society and government have the responsibility of offering proper security and safe environment for girls and women to live a worthy life. We urge the government to live up to this crucial social obligation by ensuring strict enforcement of rules and regulations on rape and other forms of sexual violence.

Heading into the round two points ahead of Bayern, Dortmund needed to beat mid-table Mainz at home to break the decades-long Bavarian stranglehold on the title. The draw, coupled with Bayern’s last-minute 2-1 win at Cologne, meant Dortmund gave away their best chance in a decade of winning the title. On each occasion, Dortmund dropped points in the next match, allowing Bayern to return to the summit — as they did on Saturday to claim the title.
