The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has ordered the payment of the outstanding electricity bills of all Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the state. Briefing newsmen Wednesday on the outcome of the week’s State Executive Council meeting, the Commissioner, Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, said, “The state is moving with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company to reconnect all government offices in Aba and parts of Umuahia by paying off the accumulated bills owed the EEDC by previous administrations in the state. “For many years, government offices in the state have been functioning without public power supply, except for those operating occasionally with mini-generators popularly called, ‘I pass my neighbour.’“However, to make working conditions for government facilities to be conducive, the state government has stepped up the move to reconnect all.”Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, explained, “Most government facilities are off the grid and if there is no power, it makes working conditions not conducive. “The reconnection started with health facilities like in Amachara General Hospital, and not only government facilities, but the entire Abia.”He further disclosed that the state government is talking with Aba Powers to see how to assist them, stating that the state government is also looking at the rural areas.

British Airways said on Wednesday it was suspending its flights to and from Tel Aviv amid safety concerns as Israel intensifies its military response to Hamas’s weekend attack. The suspension came hours after the United Kingdom airline turned around one of its flights from London’s Heathrow Airport to Tel Aviv in mid-air, citing fears over the security situation in Israel and the region. “Safety is always our highest priority and following the latest assessment of the situation we’re suspending our flights to and from Tel Aviv,” British Airways said in a statement. The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of a medical doctor, Michael Umoh, of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). The resolution to investigate the death of the doctor was reached on Tuesday following a motion moved by Adedayo Adesola (APC, Lagos). According to multiple reports, Mr Umoh died after running 72 hours shift without rest. Moving the motion, Mr Adesola said there was a need to review the working conditions of medical personnel in Nigeria. Consequently, the House resolved to mandate its Committee on Health Institutions to investigate Mr Umoh’s death.

Mobile Internet subscriptions fell to 158.48 million, despite a noticeable rise in Internet usage to 655,879.86 terabytes in August 2023. In the month under review, MTN Nigeria lost 0.063 per cent of its mobile Internet subscriptions to fall to 68.03 million subscriptions.
