Since the removal of fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, which triggered a hike in petrol prices, transport fares have surged by over 100 per cent. All these factors have contributed to doubling transport fares, and in some instances, tripling. In Osun State, commercial drivers also linked the increase in transport fares to the high fuel prices. At Iwo Road Park, fares to Lagos range from N3,000 to N5,000, depending on the park section. Speaking for the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), senior official Usman Teslim said the fuel price hike affected not only pump prices but also vehicle spare parts and other operational costs.
The Enugu State Police Command has detained three male suspects and recovered firearms, ammunition and hard drugs from them. This is contained in a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, on Sunday in Enugu. Ndukwe said that on January 19, police operatives of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, acting on credible intelligence, detained Emmanuel Mba, 31, and Nnam Onukwube, 35, in Awkunanaw axis of Enugu South Local Government Area. According to him, the suspects confessed to being members of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity, with Mba identified as the head and executioner of the unlawful group in Enugu South LGA as of December 2025. “Following screening, one suspect, Monday Ezeani, 32, was found in possession of dried substance suspected to be cannabis sativa and 39 pellets of suspected crystal methamphetamine (“Mkpuru-mmiri”).

A University of Lagos alumna, Oreoluwa Odetunde, was found dead at her off-campus residence on Thursday. While at Cornell, the report said Odetunde was active in several student organisations, including the Johnson African Business Society, the Black Graduate Business Association and the Old Ezra Finance Club. “We are devastated for Oreoluwa’s family, friends, classmates and instructors and extend our deepest condolences in this difficult time,” the Cornell Johnson Graduate School said in a LinkedIn post.
