ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Russia Friday agreed to strengthen energy cooperation, enhance energy trade and broaden energy infrastructure investment based on strategic and favourable commercial terms on Friday, January 20. It was led by Nikolay Shulginov, Minister of Energy for the Russian Federation and Ayaz Sadiq, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs. The two sides agreed on March 2023, as the timeline for crude oil export. Both sides have agreed to strengthen energy cooperation, enhance energy trade and broaden energy infrastructure investment based on strategic and favourable commercial terms. They have agreed to work on a “Comprehensive Plan for Energy Cooperation,” which will form the foundation for future work.

At least 42 journalists were killed in Pakistan during the last four years, stated documents submitted by the information ministry in the Senate. The documents elaborated that out of the 42, 15 journalists were killed in Punjab, 11 in Sindh, 13 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), and three in Balochistan. The Senate directed the Ministry of Interior to submit a comprehensive report on the killing of journalists in Pakistan. Senator Danesh Kumar, however, disagreed with the number of slain journalists and said that the Ministry of Information is unaware that not three, but more than 10 journalists have been killed in Balochistan. "If it comes out who the murdered journalists were active against, the murderers will also be caught," he said.

The United States (US) was one of the first countries to have diplomatic relations with Pakistan. Dr Aafia has serious health issues, and her children are continuously deprived of their mother’s presence, love and affection due to her detention. As such, the children are unable to have their fundamental human rights even though they are not at fault on any count. The release of Dr Aafia will be considered a token of bilateral friendship. The international community and peace-loving people of the world expect a general amnesty for foreign detainees and convicts in the US, including Dr Aafia.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Asad Ejaz Malhi used drone cameras to monitor traffic, encroachment, wrong parking and other issues at Mall Road, Data Darbar and Shah Alam Market. Issues related to road engineering can also be examined by using the drone cameras. The city traffic police had experimented with drone surveillance to pinpoint wrong parking, road engineering issues and interruption of traffic flow in March last year.

Addressing senior journalists in Lahore, the PTI chief noted that the country was passing through a critical juncture. A prominent cause for concern is the mounting circular debt—which had reached Rs.4177 billion in December 2022—generated by the power sector. And with the IMF and WB’s resistance to funnel money into the economy, other state and non-state actors are also hesitating. The government must detangle politics from the economy as the fear of decreasing popularity and electoral loss often leads to unfavorable policies. Furthermore, working to ensure that our negative balance of payments is restored to become more export-oriented is perhaps the only way forward.

It was a miracle that happened due to the united efforts of Muslims. In 1971 Pakistan faced the worst situation when the eastern part was separated due to our unjust policies. Now, it is our duty to make all efforts to make the rest of Pakistan united and provide justice to all provinces. We have a large chain of ministries but we don’t have Minister for National integration. Pakistan’s national centre was playing a vital role in national integration but was closed.

Almost four-hour long meeting ended inconclusive amid frustration with the Washington-based IMF and the World Bank. The World Bank and the IMF has reached to a conclusion that Pakistan could not be offered new loans without first ensuring sustained policies for macroeconomic stability. Pakistan has committed to the IMF that there would be zero increase in the circular debt during the current fiscal year. If the IMF did not allow any adjustment then around Rs7.50 per unit tariff would have to be increased, they added. But this would require the endorsement of the IMF, which was not forthcoming until the government showed seriousness in taking concrete steps.

The performance of the national cricket team during an active home season, which ended with the Test series against New Zealand, has left the nation of cricket-lovers saddened.
