Sindh, Balochistan and some other parts of Punjab were without power for several hours on Thursday after grid failure shut down a number of power stations one by one in stunning fashion. Karachi, the economic hub of the country, also knocked out of the grid because of the NTDC system collapse. Power Minister Khurram Dastgir addressed a news conference following the massive outages in the country. The minister said the breakdown was caused by the loss of power on two lines. This resulted in the shutting down of the Thar coal power plant and Karachi nuclear power plant.

Share:ISLAMABAD - After a long hiatus, pro-Pakistan statements have started coming from Washington amid warming ties between the two uneasy allies - United States and Pakistan. For the last few years, mostly critical statements were seen emanating from Washington as the Pak-US confidence level touched new lows. Pakistan’s closeness to China was always unacceptable to the US but when Pakistan drew closer to Russia during the previous government, Washington started drifting away further. President Joe Biden remained tough until Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari took over this year. Yesterday, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said the governments of both countries share common interests in many areas.

We knew going into Wednesday night that the Blackhawks weren’t likely to win the game. Staying out of the penalty box against an elite team is going to be critical if the Blackhawks want to stay in games. Jonathan Toews scored the 1st goal of the season for the #Blackhawks. Jujhar Khaira never made sense to me as an addition on a multi-year deal last year when the Blackhawks were going for it. So the good news is the goal above was the only goal the Blackhawks allowed at even strength in the first two periods.

Share:ISLAMABD - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has estimated that Pakistan’s budget deficit, tax collection and debt would improve in the current fiscal year. The budget deficit is estimated to reduce to 4.1 percent in the next fiscal year. According to the report, the primary budget would remain in surplus of 0.2 percent in FY23, which was in deficit of 3 percent in the previous fiscal year. The PTI on Wednesday termed the acquittal of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz in a Rs16 billion money laundering case by a special court a “slap in the nation’s face by the judicial system” of the country. In a tweet, PTI senior leader Fawad Chaudhry said “money laundering of Rs24 billion had been passed over for Hamza and Shehbaz”. “[It is] another slap of the judicial system in the nation’s face,” he said. Another PTI leader Maleeka Bokhari also expressed her annoyance over the decision in her tweet saying "country's major criminals" and "convicted thieves" had been "respectfully acquitted". “[I am] not surprised at the acquittal of Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza in the money laundering case.

LAHORE: Reacting to the acquittal of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz in the money laundering case, PTI on Wednesday termed the development a “slap in the nation’s face by the judicial system”. Commenting on the special court’s decision, PTI Chairman Imran Khan told a gathering in Sharaqpur that PM Shehbaz and Hamza’s acquittal has covered up their theft worth billions of rupees. On the other hand, one family has looted billions of rupees,” Fawad said, adding that the laundered money belonged to the people of Pakistan. Taking a jibe at the court’s decision, another PTI leader Maleeka Bokhari tweeted that the “country’s major criminals” and “convicted thieves” have been “respectfully acquitted” today. While PTI’s Parliamentary Leader in Sindh Khurrum Sher Zaman stated that he was not surprised at the acquittal of PM Shehbaz and Hamza.

This refers to the article, ‘Amateur hour – extended remix’ by Mosharraf Zaidi (October 11). China attained independence after Pakistan but has managed to raise its foreign currency reserves to over $3 trillion dollars. It is sad to see that Pakistan keeps going around, hat in hand, begging for a couple of billion dollars and when successful, gleefully announces the event as ‘good news’. In China, there is no place for politicians who think that manipulating markets for their political gain is something to be proud of. Pakistan keeps testing the same politicians who, after their disastrous stunt, play the victim card and get sympathy and applause from the people.

Pakistan’s diplomatic skills will be tested this week when the European countries will put to vote a resolution against Russia at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Diplomatic sources told The Express Tribune that Pakistan was approached by the US and other western countries to seek support in favour of the resolution. In order to address the concerns of countries, the European countries, in their draft resolution, did talk about the resolution of conflict through dialogue. Like Pakistan, India is also facing the dilemma of voting against Russia or abstaining from it. To pass the resolution, the sponsors will need a two-thirds majority of countries present and voting "yes."

KARACHI: Nobel Peace laureate Malala Yousafzai on Tuesday returned to Pakistan to meet flood victims, 10 years after a Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) assassination attempt against her. On Tuesday, two days after the 10th anniversary of the attack, she landed in Karachi, from where she will travel to areas devastated by unprecedented monsoon flooding. But there has been a resurgence in unrest since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in Kabul last year. The TTP has claimed dozens of attacks in recent weeks, mostly against security forces and anti-Taliban elders. Students and teachers walked out of schools, including the school attended by Yousafzai that her father established, to call for peace.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 22nd edition of the top-tier international tournament, will be held in Qatar between Nov. 20 and Dec. 18. The five-time-Champions-League-winner (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022) is regarded by some as one of the best midfielders in football history. Croatia was the runner-up in the 2018 World Cup, losing 2-4 to France in the final, their best showing to date. Suarez will compete in his fourth World Cup while Uruguay, the winner of the first-ever World Cup in the 1930 and 1950 tournament, will be looking to clinch their third title. The 36-year-old has two UEFA Champions League titles in 2013 and 2020 and 10 consecutive Bundesliga championships with Bayern Munich from 2013 to 2022.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan U19 team is all set to play its first international series on their own soil in 15 years. The Bangladesh U19 squad will be travelling to Pakistan to play one four-day match and five limited-over matches, all of which will take place in Faisalabad. When Bangladesh’s young cricketers visited Pakistan in 2007, it was the last time Karachi had hosted an official youth series. Afghanistan’s U19 squad travelled to Pakistan in 2014, although the games were not recognized as youth ODIs. It is highly likely that the best players from the ongoing Pakistan Junior League (PJL) will be part of the junior team during the U19 series against Bangladesh.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah’s plea seeking withdrawal of the non-bailable arrest warrant against him was accepted on Tuesday, and fixed for hearing on October 13. Further, the petition accused the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) of “misrepresenting” facts in obtaining the arrest warrant. Although the court issued the arrest warrant, the ACE officials failed to arrest the minister due to a "lack of cooperation" from the police. Two days later, a fresh arrest warrant was issued for the ACE to immediately arrest the minister and produce him before the court. The previous arrest warrant had only one address of the minister mentioned, whereas it was requested to add more addresses in the fresh warrant.
