It is unfortunate that once again, politicians have been unable to resolve a political crisis within the parliament or in committees, and the decision has inevitably ended up in the courts. Therefore, such a decision is likely to be appealed to a higher forum, and thereon, this political crisis, which benefits nobody and holds back the progress of the province, continues indefinitely. It is useful to view the matter of the chief minister position in the Punjab Assembly, and the subsequent case in the Supreme Court from that perspective. There has been a lot of litigation regarding the current makeup of the Punjab Assembly, and the decision always appears to offend one party. PTI was outraged by the Lahore High Court’s decision to declare the election of PML-N’s Hamza Shehbaz as Punjab chief minister void and order a recount of votes excluding the dissidents of ex-premier Imran Khan’s party.

The members of the Senate Climate Change standing committee were told that the UK, Iran, UAE and Saudi Arabia were sending huge quantities of solid waste to Pakistan, including hazardous waste and e-waste. Advances in technology have meant that more solid waste is generated than ever before and by advanced countries. (As do oil exporting Third World countries.) Pakistan seems to be only at an initial phase while other Third World countries have been through the experience. The waste should be handled by the society that generated it, not merely dump the problem somewhere else.

The meeting came after allies complained of lack of development funds during the National Assembly session this week. The sources said that both sides agreed to work together and address the reservations being openly expressed by the coalition partners. Emphasising the need for taking everyone along, they added, the leaders resolved that they would not leave the allies brooding. The PML-N-led government has started feeling the heat from major allies like the MQM-P, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) and an independent National Assembly member (MNA) Aslam Bhootani. He added that the PML-N wouldn’t have bothered to listen to anyone had its majority was of 10 votes.

For a government consisting of partners in double-digit and forced to deal with a no nonsense IMF, the passing of the budget in second attempt is commendable. Again, thanks to the IMF, the regressive attempt to provide relief to every individual paying income tax has been reversed and a progressively rising burden introduced. On the corporates, a super tax of 10% has been imposed raising the effective rate to around 40%. However, with the super tax declared as a temporary measure and insubstantial progress on shifting the withholding income taxes to normal income tax regime, fingers will remain crossed. Not only that it is exempt from income tax, it is also an easy route to tax avoidance by showing non-agricultural income as agricultural income.

A spokesman for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Thursday clarified that no Boeing-777 of the national flag carrier had been scrapped. Eight, out of 12 Boeing-777 aircraft, are part of PIA s operational fleet; two are undergoing the necessary maintenance and two have been grounded for the last two years as they require new engines, for which a huge amount is needed, spokesman Abdullah Hafeez Khan said in a news release. But social media platforms have been consumed by angry reactions to the killing, with some users demanding "violent retribution" against both the accused murderers and other Muslims. The far-right Hindu group Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) used social media to issue a nationwide protest call against Islamist terrorism and complain that Muslims had routinely upset the religious sentiments of India's majority religion. Her comments led to violent protests in India and embroiled the country in a diplomatic row, with nearly 20 countries calling in their Indian ambassadors for an explanation. Zubair, who has drawn frequent attention to hate speech by Hindu fringe groups, was arrested on Monday. One of the more significant changes is the addition of a Rs50 fuel levy, which the Finance Minister has claimed will not be imposed immediately. However, even last year, when the PTI government was in power, we saw little discussion and debate on the budget. Getting the budget passed was a key milestone to cross off the list in our attempts to re-enter the IMF programme. It is up to the government to ensure that the difficult decisions we are taking now are worth something later. This will only be possible through a long-term vision and focus on increasing production numbers across all sectors.

It had been hoped that we had seen the last of the pandemic, and concurrently the need for the NCOC. The current federal government on Wednesday decided to fully activate the NCOC in the light of rising coronavirus cases across the country. Reactivating the NCOC was a necessary step, considering the country reported 541 new infections overnight, pushing Pakistan’s positivity ratio above 3 percent again. The closing of the NCOC put all burden of ensuing coronavirus cases on the National Institute of Health (NIH). The NIH had already shown itself to be incapable to deal with the unpredictable coronavirus pandemic; furthermore, it has also faced several difficulties with countering polio.
