Responding to a query with regard to a third vaccine, Dr. Herath said that theoretically, a yearly vaccine needs to be administered for any virus, such as Influenza. However, the necessity of administering a yearly booster dose is yet to be determined, he added. The possibility has also sprung up in the global research medical field, and it is possible for Sri Lanka to administer such doses if deemed necessary. Dr. Herath reminded that the effectiveness of the current vaccination program and the immunity of the community as a whole is yet to be determined, and the necessity of a third, or yearly dose will be decided upon later.

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Public Health Inspectors’ Association says that it has been noted that some weddings are being held in violation of COVID-19 health guidelines issued by the Director General of Health Services. The secretary of the Association, Mahendra Balasuriya said that this was noted during the inspections carried out by PHIs. Balasuriya stated that legal action has been taken against those who organized weddings during the time and the owners of the function halls. Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Public Health Inspectors’ Association added that there is a risk of an increase in the number of COVID-19 infections being reported in the next few days as public transport services resume operations.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Around 15 children infected with COVID-19 are reported daily, Director at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH), Dr. G. Wijesuriya says. He pointed out that the rate of COVID-19 infections within children has risen drastically. According to Dr. Wijesuriya, around 70 children infected with COVID-19 are currently receiving in-house treatment at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital. Whilst pointing out that the rate of COVID-19 cases among children could further increase in the future, Dr. Wijesuriya requested parents to ensure the safety of children from the virus and emphasized the importance of following COVID-19 health guidelines as well. He added that 11 children have died due to COVID-19 at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children since the 1st wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of these 2,510 detections, the Government Information Department says that 2,490 cases are in connection with the New Year cluster while the remaining 20 are said to be foreign arrivals. Additionally, Sri Lanka’s total Covid-19 recoveries now stand at 278,910, while the death toll due to the virus stands at 4,508Nearly 28,000 Covid-10 patients are currently under medical care at selected hospitals and treatment centres across the country.

He further stated that Police have also recorded more statements from witnesses concerning the case of the death of a 16-year old domestic servant at ex-Minister Bathiudeen’s residence. The Police Spokesperson further revealed that all 11 previous domestic servants were brought to the Minister’s residence by the same trafficker. Meanwhile, another domestic worker who was employed at the residence during the 2009-2010 period has admitted that she too, has been sexually harassed by the brother-in-law of the ex-minister during her period of employment. The relevant woman has been produced before the Judicial Medical Officer, and further steps will be taken with regard to her case, while the brother-in-law of the ex-minister Bathiudeen has been named as a suspect of this case as well.
