A special discussion was held today (July 26) between President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). The meeting took place at the Presidential Secretariat this morning. The meeting was based on a written request made to the President by the party. Prior to the meeting, the representatives of SLFP joined a meeting held with the party chairman former President Maithripala Sirisena at his official residence in Mahagamasekera Mawatha. Following the meeting with President Rajapaksa, Senior Vice President of SLFP Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told journalists that the meeting was a success.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Head of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), Army Commander General Shavendra Silva urged all residents in the Western Province to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. Speaking to News 1st on Monday (26), the Army Commander said despite efforts to inoculate the eligible population with the COVID-19 vaccine, some people are yet to receive the jab, especially in the Western province. Whilst noting that a COVID-19 vaccination centre has been set up at the Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo to conduct the vaccination drive, the Army Commander requested the people to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible, since vaccination against the virus is crucial. General Shavendra Silva further requested people to ensure that health guidelines are followed, until both vaccines are received. The Army Commander said those aged above 60-years who cannot visit vaccination centres to receive their vaccines, could be inoculated at home by informing the respective Medical Officer of Health.

Accordingly, the total number of Covid-19 infections in the country has increased to 296,516. It was revealed at a discussion held at the Ministry of Environment that the amount of empty plastic yoghurt cups thrown into the environment after use in the country is between 96-100 tons annually. Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera held a discussion with several companies that currently recycle yoghurt cups on the steps to be taken for the proper recycling of yoghurt cups last week. It was also revealed that about 45 million cups of yoghurt and similar plastic cups are added to the environment every month. Therefore, the use of plastic cups for yogurt cups will not be prohibited and the use of plastic spoons for eating them will be prohibited. According to the cabinet paper, it is proposed to ban plastic spoons, forks, plastic cups, food stirrers etc.
