The suspension on issuing vehicle revenue licenses in the Western Province has been extended until June 06, 2021, the Department of Government Information has announced. The decision was reached taking into account the prevailing pandemic situation in the country, the Chief Secretary of Western Province said in a notice issued today (May 29). Accordingly, fines for non-renewal will not be charged until June 30, the Chief Secretary noted. However, the vehicle revenue license can be obtained online via the official website of the Office of the Provincial Commissioner of Motor Traffic (Western Province): http://www.motortraffic.wp.gov.lk/Authorities had previously suspended the issuance of vehicle revenue licenses in the Western Province until May 28.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today (May 29) made an inspection visit to the coastal area in Uswetakeiyawa affected by the debris washed up from the fire-ravaged container ship ‘X-Press Pearl,’ the PM’s Office stated. A massive fire erupted in the cargo vessel ‘X-Press Pearl’ carrying Nitric Acid and other chemicals on May 20. ‘X-Press Pearl’ – registered under the flag of Singapore – had departed with 1,486 containers with 25 tons of Nitric Acid, several other chemicals and cosmetics from the port of Hazira, India on May 15. Debris from the fire-stricken cargo ship washed up on the shores of Negombo in Ja-Ela, Kepumgoda, Seththappaduwa and Dungalpitiya areas. Although the beaches are already covered in oil, the biggest problem at the moment is debris, mostly made up of tiny plastic granules, which has now spread along the west coast of Sri Lanka, the authorities have stressed.

SaiNet Corporation, an IT company in Kawaguchi City and the Rotary Club of Saitama prefecture fully sponsored the cost of shipping the ambulance to Sri Lanka. Kawaguchi city organized a formal handover of the ambulance at a ceremony attended by the Mayor, many well-wishers, Saitama prefecture politicians and the press. Kawaguchi city Mayor, city officials and the Sainet Corporation gave assurances to work with the Sri Lanka Embassy for further cooperation in future.

The EU’s drug watchdog on Friday approved the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus jab for 12- to 15-year-olds, the first vaccine to get the green light for children in the bloc. The vaccine was “well tolerated” in children and there were no “major concerns” in terms of side effects, the Amsterdam-based European Medicines Agency said. Germany has said it will start vaccinating children over the age of 12 from June 7 following the authorisation by the EMA. The United States and Canada have both already authorised the vaccine for children of the same age. “The vaccine was well tolerated” among children for side effects, and they were “not raising major concerns at this time”.

Despite initial plans to relax travel restrictions on selected days during the restrictive period, the President has now decided not to relax restrictions until 07 June. The President has instructed authorities to distribute essential items to the public through a mobile truck service during this travel restricted period, as only the personnel who are engaged in essential services are permitted to leave their homes for their duties during the travel restricted period. With regard to the vaccination drive, the President has instructed health authorities to administer the second dose of Sinopharm vaccine after a month (08 June) at the same location where the people received their first jab on 08 May. The President also emphasized the need for the vaccination programme to continue in a systematic manner in the districts which have been identified and prioritized by the health sector.
