The death toll due to the virus has risen to 1,405.

Countries that had a surplus of vaccines have decided to donate the surplus to the World Health Organization’s COVAX surplus. Ministers were told about the arrival of the Indian coronavirus variant in Britain two weeks before they told the British public. On April 1, Public Health England then designated it a 'variant under investigation' and told ministers straight away. On April 15, when the Government finally announced the presence of the Indian variant in the UK, there were 77 confirmed cases. A PHE official confirmed to the Sunday Times that they informed ministers about the Indian variant on April 1. It continued an 11-day trend of rising case numbers, although overall the infection rate remains low despite the rapid spread of the Indian variant.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Leading Woman Communicator Tehani Egodawela, serving in the Sri Lanka Navy, has qualified for Tokyo Olympics in the women’s 10m air rifle 0.177 event. Tehani Egodawela is a Leading Woman Communicator who has been representing the Sri Lanka Navy Musketry Pool since 2011 and has been selected as the best shooter 07 times, representing the National Pool since 2012. In addition, she has represented Sri Lanka in many overseas competitions and has exhibited excellent performances. In such backdrop, the Olympics qualified Navy markswoman continues to train under the supervision of Captain (Naval Infantry) RA Raymond, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Navy Musketry Pool and she is coached by Master Chief Petty Officer (Retired) UM Premalal. Leading Woman Communicator Tehani Egodawela, as a result of her continuous training and dedication, has brought great honour to the Navy and the country by qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 in the women’s rifle event.

Reportedly, a bus transporting employees of a tea factory had toppled after it veered off the road near the 13th Mile Post area on the Ratnapura-Kalawana road. The individuals injured in the accident have been admitted to the Ratnapura Hospital. However, their conditions are not critical, according to hospital sources. Police investigations into the incident are currently underway.

The use of language throughout the book is simple and straightforward, making it easy for any reader from different walks of life to understand. Even though I was reading a book, it felt as if I was watching a documentary video on the National Geographic Channel. He brings to the readers the voices of those who were destined to be silent, evoking empathy and compassion towards those affected. ‘Footprints in obscurity’ is an eye-opener in a plethora of ways and a must-read for sure!

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Environment Minister on Sunday (30) said marine species and birds have died as a result of the chemical debris from the blazing MV X-PRESS PEARL container ship. Minister Mahinda Amaraweera speaking to News 1st said the The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) is already conducting tests on fish specimen from the polluted western coast. According to the available information, the fish had died due to poisoning, the Minister said. The Department of Wildlife Conservation has launched a separate investigation into whether the chemical from the blazing MV X-PRESS PEARL container ship resulted in marine species destruction. The wildlife department said it had instructed field officials to investigate the costal belt to locate the carcases of marine species that may wash ashore.
