Two of the jarring examples have to do with the appointment of two AGs—a new Auditor General and the growing efforts to undermine Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe. “It must be noted that the Attorney General performs a quasi-judicial role in respect of criminal matters. The Attorney General has to decide whether or not to charge/indict a suspect based on the material available and submitted to him by the investigating authority. Mr Wickremesinghe was attending an act-of-appointment (Aktha Pathra) presentation ceremony in Galle. “Every one of you now has a duty to protect Article 9 of the Constitution,” Mr Wickremesinghe said, pointing to several politicians who were in the audience.

Careless talk View(s):My dear Lal,I thought of writing to you when you became the focus of attention after your recent public comments, firstly about departed comrade Nandana and then more generally, saying that if anyone takes to politics and attacks you and your party, they should expect the same treatment in return. Not even Chamara Sampath, who said, “I don’t know English, I don’t know International Relations,” because we all know he is a rascal. Among the maalimaawa chaps, you have also mastered the art of getting your message across in as few words as possible. One wonders whether orders went out from Pelawatte that careless talk costs votes. That is what you should be saying bluntly to Anura sahodaraya, Lal!

Stirring the racial pot View(s):A presidential statement at a Thaipongal ceremony in Jaffna last week has made waves in the south, many perplexed by what exactly the message was that he was trying to convey. Clearly, Canada and its Western allies in the Global North are looking for survival in a world after Pax Americana. That is what the Global South has long been complaining of. A new reality has set in for those who cynically benefitted from the old world order to their advantage. Ironically, it is only now that the Global North, especially Europe, rediscovers the value and mutual respect embedded in the principles of sovereignty, self-determination and the sovereign equality of states – central to Global South thinking since its inception.
