Source: phys.orgThe start of this year's physics run at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) also marks the start of a new era. For the first time since RHIC began operating at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory in 2000, a brand new detector will track what happens when the nuclei of gold atoms smash into one another at nearly the speed of light. That new detector, sPHENIX, has been a decade in the making. It has a host of components for making precision measurements never possible before at RHIC.

Now Michigan is poised to become the 20th state — and the first in nearly three years — to pass a red flag law. The red flag measure faces pushback on the local level in a state where gun-owning culture runs deep. The Minnesota House advanced a wide-ranging public safety bill last month that includes a red flag law. An AP-NORC poll in late July found 78% of U.S. adults strongly or somewhat favor red flag laws. She spoke in favor of the red flag law at a Michigan Senate committee hearing in March.

Huddled under umbrellas and wearing whatever barriers against the most traditional of British weather, crowds watched King Charles III be crowned monarch Saturday—the culmination of a seemingly endless, 70-year wait. In Westminster Abbey, presented with the ceremonial scepter and rod, a gold-robed Charles was crowned king to cries of “God save the King.” His face did not betray much emotion. With Charles seated on the throne, his son Prince William pledged his loyalty to his father as his heir. The British people were then invited to pledge their loyalty to the king—a feature of controversy in recent days. Source: www.thedailybeast.com

New scrutiny of Uranus’ largest moons suggest the bodies may contain ocean layers that could be dozens of miles deep. Uranus has at least 27 moons, which are cold and icy like their host planet. A recent study looked at the planet’s largest moons: Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Oberon, and Miranda (Uniquely, Uranus has moons named after characters created by Shakespeare and Alexander Pope.) The researchers found that four of those moons may be large enough to retain internal heat, turning their would-be-solid insides into wet environments. Besides the moons’ internal heat, the researchers found that chlorides and ammonia are likely present in these oceans.
Though the Writers Guild of America is striking for better pay in an industry where streaming has upended many of the old rules, AI looms as rising anxiety. But even though no one’s about to see a “By AI” writers credit at the beginning a movie, there are myriad ways that regenerative AI could be used to craft outlines, fill in scenes and mock up drafts. Experts say the struggle screenwriters are now facing with regenerative AI is just the beginning. The Screen Actors Guild, set to begin its own bargaining with the AMPTP this summer, has said it's closely following the evolving legal landscape around AI. The writers are wrestling with the threat of AI just as concern widens over how hurriedly regenerative AI products has been thrust into society.
Director, Allergy Immunology and Cell Biology Unit, University of Sri Jayewardenepura Dr. Chandima Jeevandara yesterday said that a research conducted by the university has confirmed that Dengue type 3 serotype is spreading in the country. He said that the number of dengue patients reported from the country witnessed a sharp increase in 2017 with the change of dengue variant spreading in the county as patients have not developed immunity to face the new dengue type. Dr. Jeevandara said that almost all samples tested at laboratories were found to be Dengue 3 serotype. He warned that there is a possibility of an increase in the number of dengue positive cases due to the spread of a dengue variant with the onset of the rainy season. Health authorities yesterday said that over 30,000 dengue patients have been reported in the country since January 2023.
Source: phys.orgBreakthroughs in ancient genome reconstruction and biotechnology are now revealing the rich molecular secrets of Paleolithic microorganisms. In a new study published in Science, a transdisciplinary team of researchers led by the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, and Harvard University reconstructed bacterial genomes of previously unknown bacteria dating to the Pleistocene. Using their genetic blueprints, they built a biotechnology platform to revive the ancient bacteria's natural products.

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Getty/FacebookA five minute video posted by a burly, heavily tattooed Kansas barber accusing the participants in an upcoming LGBTQIA+ festival of being “demonic” kiddie mind molesters has triggered a maelstrom of hatred against the event’s organizers. Four years ago, Thomas Galindo of Legends Barber Shop in Hutchinson participated in a fundraiser for the same Salt City Fest. But whatever prompted the change, the poisonous ranting on Galindo’s business Facebook page last week—first reported by The Hutchinson News—has caused the event’s organizers and sponsors to endure a barrage of threats and insults and slurs. “By the next morning, the first threatening phone call came in and it was just call after call after call after call after that,” Julia Johnson, the chairman of the board and co-founder of Salt City Pride, told The Daily Beast.
