We have a world-class healthcare system with excellent mental healthcare professionals and specialists but are these services reaching all those who need them? Although not all mental health issues require psychiatric care, there is also a dire shortage of supporting services offered by counsellors, therapists and clinical psychologists. With more and more children and youth presenting with mental health issues, are schools equipped to deal with children who need help? How we regard mental health and respond to those with mental health issues play a crucial role in reducing the stigma attached to mental health. We all have a part to play in realising this year’s World Mental Health Day theme: “Mental healthcare for all: let’s make it a reality”.
