In her first speech as Venezuela’s interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez lambasted the US and pledged fealty to Nicolás Maduro. “She’s essentially willing to do what we think is necessary to make Venezuela great again,” Trump said. The 56-year-old former labour lawyer struck a defiant tone in her televised speech on Saturday night. The opposition leader mobilised Edmundo González’s winning presidential campaign last year – Maduro ignored the result – and won the Nobel peace prize. Rodríguez said Venezuela “will never again be anyone’s colony – neither of old empires, nor of new empires, nor of empires in decline”.

Though Trump’s electoral victories cannot be attributed to any one thing, his “America first” narrative certainly struck a chord. Venezuela has many problems, including drug gangs and authoritarian rule, but they hardly justify what Trump has done. Even so, the Trump White House reckons that the costs attributable to “illicit opioids, primarily fentanyl” (including death, treatment, crime and lost labour productivity) totalled $2.7tn in 2023. But there are no grounds for claiming that either the US government or any US petroleum company literally owned Venezuela’s oil or land and was robbed. The same can be said for his arrogating the right to open up Venezuela’s oil sector to investments from US corporations.

The South American country is not Ukraine, nor, for that matter, is it Afghanistan, Iraq or Libya. Plan A for post-Maduro governance, Trump suggested, was to leave Maduro’s vice-president, Delcy Rodríguez, in power, because she would help the United States do what it wanted. Within two hours, Rodríguez insisted that Maduro remained Venezuela’s rightful leader and denounced the United States as an illegal, imperialist invader seeking to plunder the country. Trump’s definition of these threats is almost infinitely porous, extending to what he has repeatedly called “the enemy from within”. More likely, Donald Trump’s luck with hit-and-run military strikes is about to run out.

The world “may not have time” to prepare for the safety risks posed by cutting-edge AI systems, according to a leading figure at the UK government’s scientific research agency. David Dalrymple, a programme director and AI safety expert at the Aria agency, told the Guardian people should be concerned about the growing capability of the technology. Describing the consequences of technological progress getting ahead of safety as a “destabilisation of security and economy”, Dalrymple said more technical work was needed on understanding and controlling the behaviours of advanced AI systems. AISI also found that the most advanced systems can autonomously complete tasks that would take a human expert over an hour. The institute also tested advanced models for self-replication, a key safety concern because it involves a system spreading copies of itself to other devices and becoming harder to control.

The superseding federal indictment unsealed against Venezuela’s leader Nicolás Maduro on Saturday immediately after his capture closely resembles 2020 charges against him but has several important new twists: the new indictment appears to embrace controversial claims made by the Trump administration about a Venezuelan street gang, Tren de Aragua (TdA). Maduro was captured by US forces early on Saturday and ferreted out of the country after a series of explosions in the Venezuelan capital. Though the indictment doesn’t allege Maduro ever met Guerrero Flores, it builds the case in court for what critics say are Donald Trump’s exaggerated and unsubstantiated allegations about TdA. The deportation of purported TdA members, with no court oversight, to El Salvador’s Cecot prison has been one of the most contested parts of Trump’s deportation efforts. Intelligence from inside the US ran counter to all of Trump’s claims about Tren de Aragua.

German leftwing militants protesting over the climate crisis and AI have claimed responsibility for an arson attack that cut power to tens of thousands of households in Berlin. The area affected by the power cut includes many elderly care homes and hospitals as well as high-rise buildings with residents who are reliant on elevators that are now out of order. In March 2024, Vulkangruppe claimed an arson attack against a pylon at the Tesla gigafactory outside Berlin that cut off electricity to the plant and temporarily halted production. In its 2024 annual security report, Germany’s domestic intelligence watchdog cited repeated attacks on the regional power grid by Vulkangruppe, which it classes as a leftwing extremist organisation. Experts said attacks on energy infrastructure required little specialist knowledge to have a dramatic impact, with maps featuring key components of the power grid widely available online and few contingency plans ready to be enacted in case of sabotage.
