In 2023, Indian nationals held the lion’s share of UK work visas, accounting for a staggering 162,655 approvals. Canada admitted just 1.88 lakh Indian students in 2024, barely half of the intake two years earlier. In 2025, nearly 60,000 Indian students were enrolled, up from 49,500 in 2023, according to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany. For months, right-wing politicians, including Vice President JD Vance, have accused Britain of chilling free speech by arresting people who posted inflammatory anti-migrant messages online during last summer’s riots. At the same time, left-wing activists in London are waging a legal battle against the British government for arresting peaceful protesters who carried signs in support of a pro-Palestine organization that the government has labeled a terrorist group. Until last week, the British police and the government had staunchly defended the arrests on both sides of the ideological spectrum as necessary for public safety. But the dramatic arrest last week of a comedian turned anti-transgender activist — the latest clash over the limits of free speech in Britain — may be causing officials to rethink their position. That has the potential to reshape the contours of a debate that has implications for politics, free expression and criminal justice in both countries.

The London Underground shuddered largely to a halt on Monday, as one of the world’s biggest public transit systems was hit by a labor strike that is scheduled to continue until Friday morning, affecting millions of travelers. Stations on the underground network, known as the Tube, were shuttered, and buses and trains running above ground were more crowded than usual, while many commuters walked or cycled into the city. Trams and the Elizabeth line, a relatively new route running from the east to the west of London, were operating on Monday. Still, with more than four million Tube journeys made every weekday, stores, bars, restaurants and other businesses were braced for financial losses if, as expected, more people work remotely and avoid central London. Against a backdrop of rising food and energy costs, labor unrest has afflicted several parts of Britain in recent years, including a long-running dispute by garbage collectors in Birmingham, the country’s second most populous city.

The agreement ends the family feud, which inspired the hit series Succession, over who will control the Murdoch empire following the death of Rupert, 94. Lachlan’s emergence as a power-broker was demonstrated when he hosted the News Corp summer party in London earlier this year. Media analyst Alex DeGroote said: “The deal underpins the future of the News Corp UK media assets, including Sun and Times. “It is almost three decades since Rupert Murdoch described his eldest son Lachlan as a ‘first among equals’. That’s how long it has taken for the Murdoch family to finally settle the succession question.

The Trump administration is quietly dismantling efforts by the Internal Revenue Service to shut down a slew of aggressive tax shelters used by America’s biggest multinational companies and wealthiest people. The administration, bowing to pressure from industry groups, right-wing activists and congressional Republicans, is quickly rolling back several I.R.S. law enforcement efforts, including one aimed at a lucrative tax shelter used by companies like Occidental Petroleum and AT&T. said it would rescind Biden administration rules that had required companies using such tax strategies to report them to the agency, a change making it more difficult for auditors to find the transactions. to withdraw yet another line of attack on the transactions, one providing guidance to auditors on how to analyze the tax shelter deals.

“There were two people from BBC Comedy. I wanted to say to him: ‘You have absolutely no idea what you’re doing.’John Cleese as Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers. “The head of BBC Comedy, Jimmy Gilbert, took me to lunch and asked me if there was anything I’d like to do. But Fawlty Towers remains just 12 pieces of comedy perfection whose reputation has grown, perhaps, because they weren’t ruthlessly exploited. But beyond his name, it’s those 12 comedy classics in Fawlty Towers that he’ll be remembered for.

This is something that I have done with my own mirrors, leaving them marred by streaks and small specs of dirt. I was very impressed after using this hack to clean the mirror (Image: NQ/Andrew Smart) Spraying the solution onto the full-length mirror, ensuring the whole area was covered, I then employed the “Z” technique to carefully and firmly wipe the surface down. Compared to my usual method, which involves simply cleaning the mirror willy-nilly, this more considered approach proved to be far more effective. Not only does the technique work, but it was also quite fun and was easy to replicate over various types of mirrors. The “N” technique works better for wider mirrors, while the “Z” technique is effective for longer, larger mirrors, such as the one I did my initial trial on.

Israel attempted to kill senior members of Hamas in an airstrike on Tuesday in Qatar, a sharp escalation that brought the Mideast war to a close U.S. ally and a primary mediator in trying to end the conflict in Gaza. The Israeli strike on a Hamas meeting, where the group said its officials were discussing a cease-fire proposal backed by President Trump, threatened to undermine negotiations over the Gaza war. The afternoon attack by Israel’s air force hit an area of the capital, Doha, that is near schools and embassies, sending black smoke billowing into the air. Hamas said the Israeli strike had failed to kill senior officials in the group, without specifying whether they had sustained injuries. In a statement, the group confirmed that the son of Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas’s chief negotiator; his office manager; and three other people affiliated with Hamas had been killed in the attack.
