Google may have faced Apple-like pressure from UK: WydenSenator Ron Wyden has formally requested Tulsi Gabbard , Director of National Intelligence, to initiate an investigation into the UK’s alleged digital spying practices, raising alarms that British surveillance laws may be compromising the private data of millions of Americans. In a letter, Wyden suggested that Google, alongside Apple , may have been secretly pressured to allow ‘backdoor’ access to user data. This raises serious questions about whether Google, like Apple, has faced such secret demands.Apple has resisted the attempts to access encrypted user data , with reports surfacing earlier this year that the UK Home Office had secretly ordered Apple to create a backdoor for encrypted messages. In response, Apple disabled its most secure data storage option for UK users, while maintaining it globally.Wyden had previously written to Gabbard, urging her to demand the UK retract its order. Gabbard had concurred, calling such a backdoor demand “a clear and egregious violation of Americans’ privacy and civil liberties.” Apple is currently challenging the order in a British surveillance court.Wyden’s latest letter suggests that the privacy implications extend far beyond Apple users.

Figures are about the same as in 2024With Keir Starmer announcing today that the UK will seek to recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza and other conditions, recent YouGov data for The Times shows that the British public support recognising Palestinian statehood by more than three to one. The survey, conducted on 24-25 July, finds that almost half (45%) say that the UK government should recognise Palestine as an independent state, while only 14% disagree – with 41% unsure.

Our goal remains a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state. So today, as part of this process towards peace, I can confirm the U.K. will recognize the state of Palestine by the United Nations General Assembly in September unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a cease-fire and commit to a long-term sustainable peace, reviving the prospect of a two-state solution. We see starving babies, children too weak to stand. Images that will stay with us for a lifetime. The suffering must end.

So far, the summer has been a mix of hot temperatures followed by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across regions in the UK. But now, it looks like the weather could be on the rise again as the Met Office and WX Charts forecast heatwave temperatures are likely. However, Scotland and Northern Ireland will have to wait a little longer for warmer weather as the Met Office shares that "rain and showers" are likely for the regions. "For most, dry weather is likely to continue, although short periods of showers and thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. "Temperatures are most likely to be around to above average, with a near normal chance of brief spells of hot weather."

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Tuesday that Britain would recognize the state of Palestine in September if Israel does not agree to a cease-fire with Hamas, pouring pressure on the Israeli government to halt a war that has put Gaza on the brink of famine. Mr. Starmer said recognition would not be immediate but would come as part of a broader European effort to end the ruinous war between Israel and Hamas. Britain followed in the steps of France, which announced last week that it would recognize an independent Palestinian state in September. Britain’s decision will deepen Israel’s diplomatic isolation after it abandoned a truce with Hamas in March and resumed its military offensive in Gaza. It also carries significant symbolic weight, given Britain’s diplomatic stature and history in the Middle East.

Property owners challenging new assessed values calculated during Lackawanna County’s first comprehensive reassessment since 1968 face a Friday appeals deadline if they plan to make their cases at formal hearings starting next month and continuing through October. And while an influx of additional appeals is possible before the deadline, the county remains on pace to receive fewer appeals than officials and experts predicted it might as the reassessment project nears completion. Those who plan to appeal their new assessed values but have yet to formally file must do so by 4 p.m. Friday, he said. Reassessment appeals hearings will begin Monday at 10 a.m. and continue through October. Those boards have the right to increase, decrease or leave unchanged an appealing property owner’s assessment.

By JILL LAWLESS and DANICA KIRKA, Associated PressLONDON (AP) — The U.K. will recognize a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza, allows the U.N. to bring in aid and takes other steps toward long-term peace, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Tuesday. On his flight back to the U.S. on Tuesday, Trump said the two never discussed the U.K. potentially recognizing a Palestinian state. More than 140 countries recognize a Palestinian state, including a dozen in Europe. Countries including Ireland, Spain and the Netherlands have sought to aggressively pressure Israel to let in more aid and cease military operations. More than 250 of the 650 lawmakers in the House of Commons have signed a letter urging the British government to recognize a Palestinian state.

Britain is now more actively weighing the recognition of a Palestinian state, two senior government officials said Monday, a striking shift prompted by public revulsion at the images of starving children in Gaza and intense pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer from lawmakers in his own Labour Party. Mr. Starmer did not follow President Emmanuel Macron when he announced last week that France would recognize the state of Palestine. The British prime minister said in a statement at the time that recognition had to be part of “a wider plan which ultimately results in a two-state solution and lasting security for Palestinians and Israelis.”But the British officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive internal deliberations, said momentum was building because of the escalating humanitarian crisis, with reports of deaths from starvation in Gaza after months of restrictions on aid imposed by the Israeli authorities. Mr. Starmer has long backed the right of Palestinians to an independent state. But officials said he had resisted immediate recognition because he viewed it as a largely “performative” gesture that would not improve conditions on the ground and could even complicate negotiations to strike a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
