But everything suggests that, once more, what will not be addressed at their meeting is the biggest threat to humanity and the planet: neoliberal capitalism. Yet at its core, economic inequality is about much more fundamental issues. Kemp also detects economic inequality as a crucial factor in predicting societal collapse. An increasing proportion of the wealth created under neoliberal capitalism goes to the richest 1%. That is what we need to know about increased economic inequality.
China’s population fell for a fourth consecutive year in 2025 as the birthrate plunged to another record low despite the introduction of polices aimed at encouraging people to have children. Yi Fuxian, a demographer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said births in 2025 were “roughly the same level as in 1738, when China’s population was only about 150 million”. The effects of the policy, which was lifted in 2017, mean that the pool of people of child-bearing age is also shrinking, as China’s population rapidly ages. China’s death rate of 8.04 for every 1,000 members of the population in 2025 was the highest since 1968. China’s urbanisation rate was 68% in 2025, up from about 43% in 2005.
Donald Trump has linked his repeated threats to seize control of Greenland to his failure to win the Nobel peace prize, as transatlantic tensions over the Arctic island escalated further and threatened to rekindle a trade war with the EU. Trump campaigned hard to win last year’s prize, which was awarded to María Corina Machado, the Venezuelan opposition leader. In his text message to Støre, Trump said Denmark “cannot protect” Greenland from Russia or China, adding: “Why do they have a ‘right of ownership’ anyway? The world was “not secure unless we have Complete and Total control of Greenland”, he said. The UK prime minister, Keir Starmer, said he was working closely with EU leaders and called for calm discussion between allies.

Mathys Tel and his team are furious that he has been axed from Tottenham's Champions League squadMathys Tel has been kicked out of Tottenham's Champions League squad, marking the second time he has been dropped in Europe this season. Thomas Frank confirmed that Tel, who signed from Bayern Munich for £30million last summer, has been axed now that Dominic Solanke is back fit. The France international had already been left out of the Spurs squad back in September. Solanke's return allows Spurs to exploit a loophole in UEFA regulations to bring him back into the squad. It's a tough one for Mathys, but he is not in the squad tomorrow."
BUS HORROR Gory video fanatic killed gran by knifing her 18 times as she waited for bus in random attack, court toldA GORY video fanatic killed a gran by stabbing her 18 times as she waited for a bus in a random attack, a court heard. Jala Debella, 24, allegedly carried out the “senseless attack” on Anita Mukhey, 66, in North London, at around 11.50am on May 9, 2024. This mean the jury must determine whether Debella had killed Anita, as the evidence “most strongly” suggested. Debella allegedly had a “particular interest in very violent videos” online, which depicted extreme violence with knives and other weapons. After he returned home, Debella allegedly searched the internet for “knife”, “gore video” and “breaking news“.
Ms Mukhey died at 12.22pm despite efforts of medics and police, the Old Bailey heard. On Monday (January 19), jurors were told that Debella was unwell and could not attend court as prosecutor Jonathan Polnay KC opened a trial of the facts. Mr Polnay told jurors their task was to determine whether Debella had killed Ms Mukhey, as the evidence “most strongly” suggested. CCTV then picked up the defendant walking north in Edgware Road, past a bus stop and then returning to the scene where Ms Mukhey was attacked. Forensic analysis showed it had DNA from Debella and Ms Mukhey on it, the court was told.
