For decades a core objective of the Soviet Union was to “decouple” the United States from Europe. Decoupling, as it was called, would break the Western alliance that kept Soviet tanks from rolling across the Prussian plains. Now, in weeks, President Trump has handed Moscow the gift that eluded it during the Cold War and since. Gripped by a sense of abandonment, alarmed at the colossal rearmament task before it, astonished by the upending of American ideology, Europe finds itself adrift. “The United States was the pillar around which peace was managed, but it has changed alliance,” said Valérie Hayer, the president of the centrist Renew Europe group in the European Parliament.

Unfortunately, after 15 minutes in the air there was a bird strike causing catastrophic damage to the plane’s engine. The flight returned to the airport and was followed by a 30-hour delay before an alternative aircraft arrived. We’re looking for something a little adventurous and our ideal travel window would be mid-June to the end of July. One in ten restaurants is facing closure this year. One posh place in Mayfair has introduced a £100-a-head minimum spend. From my mid-twenties to my mid-fifties, I’d eat out at least once a week. As dining habits change, and my own restaurant-attending career draws to a close, I thought I’d document the highs and lows. My first visit to France, my first experience of steak and chips, plus béarnaise sauce, plus fresh bread.

Despite the sunny weather, Nuno Espírito Santo wore his usual long padded jacket. Premier League opponents know what he’s going to do but whether they can stop him doing it to them is quite another matter. This was Nuno 101; this was Nottingham Forest at their ruthless, minimalist, best. Of course City are not the scalp they were: this was the 15th defeat of a cataclysmic season for Pep Guardiola. But the job Forest did on them was still a major feat,

Pressure is growing on Labour to fulfill their election pledge to scrap migrant hotels - with the Home Office yet to commit to an end date. It comes as the total cost of accommodating asylum seekers in hotels is now £5.5million every day, according to figures obtained by The Times. The increase comes despite their election manifesto pledge to 'end asylum hotels, saving the taxpayer billions of pounds'. Nevertheless, the Home Office is yet to set a definite end date on migrant hotels as it does not want to commit to 'arbitrary targets'.
