“Local communities naturally want to see new jobs but not at the expense of higher electricity prices or the diversion of their water,” Smith said in an interview with The Associated Press. In Hobart, Indiana, last week, the City Council approved a tax-abatement package for a multibillion-dollar Amazon data center planned there. Company officials have pledged that the centers’ impact will be minimal and will contribute carbon-free energy to the power grid. There are times when the power that is coming to our data centers is generated by something like natural gas. Smith: We are supportive of Wisconsin developing a comprehensive electricity plan.

Today, the term remigration has come to refer to the forcible, en masse expulsion of unwanted, often non-white, minority populations. Recent American remigration policies have institutionalised this use of extremist European rhetoric to curb immigration within its own borders, bridging the values held by right-wing actors on the other side of the Atlantic. Hidden costs: from economic stability to safety A core claim advanced by far-right movements worldwide is that remigration constitutes a common solution to manage problematic migration systems. Yet, for political players in these countries, migration is presented as the systemic problem that must be addressed. The aggressive US migration restriction and remigration ‘solution’ borders on incoherence, as the key innovation component of American companies and universities is foreign-born workers, posing the threat of a brain drain.

The Department of Homeland Security has altered its account of an immigration enforcement-related shooting in a Baltimore suburb on Christmas Eve after details in its initial statement were contradicted by local police. The new detail in the Maryland ICE shooting was first announced Thursday by the Anne Arundel County Police Department, which is investigating the incident. The ICE officers were conducting “a targeted immigration enforcement operation” in Glen Burnie when they confronted the van, McLaughlin said. Officers approached the van and asked Sousa-Martins to turn off the engine, but he refused and attempted to leave the scene, ramming ICE vehicles, and “then (driving) his van directly at ICE officers,” McLaughlin said. As with the Maryland incident, DHS officials allege both Good and the driver in Portland “weaponized” their vehicles and targeted law enforcement.

Getty ImagesAnti-regime protests in the Iranian capital, Tehran, have divided the city in recent days, a resident told CNN on Tuesday, with some people fleeing amid the deadly unrest while others race home after work to get changed before taking to the streets. The resident, who asked to remain anonymous due to security concerns, told CNN that the daytime is eerily quiet before protests resume at night. “The first two nights of the big protests — Thursday and Friday — were huge,” said the resident. “People of all ages came out — young people with their parents, all walks of life, all parts of the city.”“Saturday got really, really violent, and that’s when you saw a lot of people go home and stop going out,” the resident said. But most people are just fed up with the domestic situation in Iran, the resident said.
