A proposed ballot measure to require voters to show government identification may be on the state ballot in November. Supporters have gathered more than enough petition signatures for the measure to qualify, though verification by state election officials is pending. AdvertisementUC Berkeley Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky said that both the SAVE Act and proposed ballot measure in California are not only unnecessary, but harmful to democracy. The ballot measure will make significant changes to how Californians vote, and enact new mandates on county elections officials. Originally I was going to call this post “The New York Times coddles faith again,” but there is not all that much coddling in this review of Christopher Beha’s new book Why I am not an Atheist. From my post:Even the title of this New Yorker article is dumb: “faith in atheism” is an oxymoron, for a lack of belief in gods is not a “faith” in any meaningful sense. But it plays well with the progressive New Yorker crowd (same as the NY Times crowd) in being soft on religion and hard on atheism. That is something Egan apparently documents in his own book and is, of course, the subject of Beha’s book. Instead, Egan’s take is anodyne, for one simply cannot get away with pushing nonbelief in the New York Times.

A brief ground stop was initially placed by the Federal Aviation Administration, but a spokesperson for Los Angeles World Airports said that has since been lifted.
The slain Americans were part of a sustainment unit in Kuwait, two U.S. officials told The Washington Post. Trump has said in multiple social posts since the operation began that he is committed to a long-term military operation against Iran. In 2024, three U.S. soldiers were killed and others wounded in a drone attack on their base in Jordan. Commanders and personnel failed to properly detect and intercept an Iranian-made drone that smashed into the troops’ living quarters. Investigators later found senior leaders denied a request to position an air defense system there.

BEIT SHEMESH, Israel — Even before U.S. and Israeli warplanes struck Iranian targets, officials in Washington and Jerusalem were bracing for retaliation. By Monday, less than 72 hours after the first strikes, the conflict had ricocheted well beyond the original targets in Iran, Israel and Iraq. Militias aligned with Tehran claimed strikes from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. “The regional spillover is already happening,” said Shira Efron, a Tel Aviv-based fellow at Rand, the security think tank. Drones even struck a port in Oman — long a quiet intermediary between Washington and Tehran — an attack Iranian officials blamed on a targeting mistake.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) on Monday will unveil new legislation that would raise $4.4 trillion in taxes from America’s roughly 1,000 billionaires, aiming to roughly halve their fortunes. Sanders’s new legislation, which expands on his prior efforts, calls for an annual 5 percent wealth tax on America’s billionaires. Gavin Newsom, widely viewed as a top Democratic presidential candidate, has objected to a billionaire tax currently being proposed in his state. The total wealth of America’s billionaires rose last year by roughly 20 percent, according to Americans for Tax Fairness, a left-leaning organization. Sanders argues that the measure is an essentially conservative compromise that would leave most billionaires’ fortunes intact.

The Trump administration has decided to drop its prolonged court fights against four law firms with ties to Democrats, after it had sought and failed to cut out the firms’ access to the federal government as part of an apparent retribution campaign by President Donald Trump. Each of the firms, Trump said, had employed lawyers who had investigated or opposed him personally. He attempted to use the powers of the presidency to deprive the firms’ lawyers of access to federal buildings, secured classified information and meetings with federal agencies – all mainstays of Washington-based legal work. Advertisement AdvertisementThe firms were notified by the administration this weekend that it was dropping its appeals, according to a source familiar with the decision.
