RELATED STORY | Congress is set to leave town without funding DHS, making a partial government shutdown all but certainOther federal agencies have already been funded, meaning only agencies within DHS would be affected until Congress reaches an agreement. There is perhaps no greater sign of the coal industry’s decline than the Trump administration’s demand this week that the Pentagon purchase more energy generated by the fossil fuel. Washington has already forced multiple coal plants to remain open beyond their scheduled retirements, trampling local control over energy projects and driving up electricity prices. A little more than two decades ago, coal generated most of the country’s electricity. Non-carbon energy sources such as solar and wind, which together already eclipse coal’s output, have also cut into the business. It is telling that despite these economic forces, no new coal plants have been under development for more than a decade.

I wanted to be a journalist in college, but I kept crying when I listened to NPR, so I chose comedy instead. Originally from North Carolina, Gabe, who played drums, moved to Los Angeles just a year prior with his two musician brothers. Soon after, my sister told me she had seen Gabe on a dating app. My sister told me he was on Hinge. When I think of foregoing a baby for a comedy career, I think: What career?

One side will eventually have to cave, and the popularity of proposed changes to immigration enforcement will have a major impact on which side “wins.” Meanwhile, people will soon see impacts on their air travel, emergency response services and, to some extent, immigration enforcement. The Trump administration and Republicans point to numbers that show Americans want undocumented immigrants to be deported. Preventing racial profilingRepublicans have argued that recent Supreme Court rulings have allowed immigration enforcement to target people based on how they look or what language they speak. Richard Tsong-Taatarii/The Minnesota Star Tribune/Getty ImagesDemocrats are pushing to create a new system for accountability for immigration enforcement. Kennedy was sworn in as the nation’s top health official one year ago, following contentious confirmation hearings in the Senate. Brad Smith, who served as a top health official in the first Trump administration, had privately assessed HHS’s operations in recent weeks and recommended staffing changes, according to two people. That work helped boost their standing at the White House, according to three of the people. “They’ve had plenty of victories,” said a White House official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss personnel changes. They accused Kennedy of “weaponizing public health for political gain” and “putting millions of American lives at risk” by purging health officials from government.
