Researchers investigating the long-term effects of the 2025 firestorms on L.A.’s beaches have found that rarest of things: good news. Even at their peak, lead levels barely surpassed 1 microgram per liter — well below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s aquatic life safety threshold of 8.1 micrograms per liter. “This isn’t something we would flag if we were testing your soil in your yard ,” Held said. The recent findings are consistent with water quality tests the State Water Resources Control Board conducted earlier in 2025. “It’s not just about the fires, but it’s about urbanization and how much our city needs to continue the work of doing testing in the water.”

The average tax refund this year is higher by about $350, or nearly 11%, when compared to last year, according to the latest Internal Revenue Service data as of March 6. Gas prices have soared to an average of $3.91 nationwide, up 93 cents from February 28, when the US-Israeli conflict with Iran began. “The tax refund relief might not pay the political dividends that Republicans and Trump were hoping for,” she continued. In total, its spending will increase by $750 because higher gas prices will cause other items to become more expensive. Even when the Middle East conflict ends, it will take time for gas prices to decline.

The Trump administration is going after the National Study of Learning, Voting and Engagement, a 13-year running nonpartisan research group that tracks student voting rates across more than 1,000 college and university campuses. NSLVE essentially tells college campuses how many of their students voted in a given election, without anybody’s individual data or details about vote choices. “NSLVE is a longitudinal nonpartisan study that seeks to understand whether students vote, not who they vote for,” reads the Tufts’ statement. Advertisement“All data received by Tufts from the Clearinghouse are anonymized, and NSLVE’s reports include only de-identified, aggregated data about overall student voting trends,” says the university. The National Student Clearinghouse announced it is cutting ties with NSLVE, effective March 27, citing its commitment to following federal privacy laws.

LOADING ERROR LOADINGTwo former FBI agents have filed a lawsuit against Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel, alleging they were fired solely for their work on an investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Nor were Plaintiffs presented with any evidence purportedly supporting their firings or given an opportunity to appeal,” the complaint noted.

Earlier this week, he told reporters that he believes he's going to have "the honor of taking" the country. He said it's a "weakened nation" that's essentially running on "fumes." Those comments came as Cuba was once again thrust into an islandwide blackout. Dr. Brian Fonseca, director of the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy at Florida International University, joined "Forbes Newsroom" to discuss the dual economic and energy crises Cuba is currently facing, as well as Trump's remarks on the island nation.

Taylor Moyer has been trying to get child care subsidies ever since her oldest child was born eight years ago. Strapped for child care funding, some states have started waitlists for child care subsidies — or lengthened existing ones — putting new applicants in limbo when they need immediate help paying for care. Virginia is one of 14 states that have recently instituted or expanded waitlists, according to Child Care Aware of America. The number of states with waitlists has nearly doubled since early 2022, according to Child Care Aware of America. And the administration rescinded Biden-era rules that paid child care providers in a more stable way.

First off, any effort to seize ballots on or after Election Day would be wildly illegal. And importantly, there are myriad ways that state election officials and candidates themselves can counter this threat before or after any action by the administration. It’s a crucial distinction when it comes to potential election chicanery. The warrant in Fulton County also targeted materials from a now-six-year-old election, not an election that is underway or just completed. Similarly, a subpoena provides an opportunity to counter it: States and election officials may be able to step in and sue for an injunction before any materials are seized.
