Smoke rises in the Fujairah oil industry zone, caused by debris after the interception of a drone on March 14. - Staff/ReutersBrent crude held above $100 a barrel as Iran stepped up attacks on key energy infrastructure in the Middle East and U.S. allies rebuffed President Trump’s call to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Iran continues to export oil, with shipments from Kharg Island—the nation’s key energy hub—resuming Sunday after a two-day interruption due to U.S. strikes, according to Kpler data. With no immediate resolution in sight for disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz, market watchers say oil prices are unlikely to ease anytime soon. Until flows through the strategic chokepoint resume, further price highs might still be ahead, even with the International Energy Agency’s record release of oil reserves.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 3% to trade around $103 a barrel, having jumped more than 4% earlier in the trading session. Iran’s fresh attacks on energy infrastructure have added to worries about global oil and natural gas supply. The United Arab Emirates suspended operations at its Shah natural gas field outside Abu Dhabi following a drone attack Tuesday. Prolonged disruptionTuesday’s jump in oil prices follows a fall in the previous trading session. Crude oil prices remain about 40% higher than before US-Israeli strikes on Iran prompted Tehran to choke off the Strait of Hormuz, ordinarily a conduit for around a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supply.

I think I’m totally inaccurately portrayed.”Nearly three decades later, the current U.S. president still hasn’t reconciled with the media. During the first year of his second term, he has escalated his attacks on reporters and media outlets that have asked him uncomfortable questions or contradicted him. “Criminals” and “unpatriotic”Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr, a Trump ally, announced this weekend on X that he is reviewing the licenses of some media outlets. The Pentagon chief, who has renamed his department the “Department of War,” asserted that the media was trying to discredit the president. Major outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, Associated Press, and The Atlantic, among others, refused to sign it.

Iran’s effective shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz has locked up 20% of the world’s oil. But the locked-down Strait of Hormuz has restricted access to other goods, too. HeliumMore than a quarter of the world’s helium comes from Qatar and travels through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the US Geological Survey. For example, most of Asia’s naphtha – a chemical used in paints and cleaners comes – through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Independent Commodity Intelligence Services. The war has already prompted other regions that make those materials, including Latin America, to make more, and they’ve responded to increased demand by raising their prices, according to S&P Global.

A US Navy warship believed to be carrying thousands of Marines and sailors to the Middle East is nearing the Malacca Strait off Singapore as it makes its way to the region, maritime tracking data showed Tuesday. The amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli was approaching Singapore, at the southwestern edge of the South China Sea, Tuesday morning, according to AIS tracking data seen by CNN. Revealing their positions while transiting areas with heavy maritime traffic, like the waters around Singapore, enables safer operations. American journalism, like education, has been shaken in the past decade by AI. Some of this can be attributed to the restructuring of the newspaper industry and choices made by media owners. Other aspects of the decline of American media originate from changes in technology and the advent of AI. At the same time, the 1910s saw the rise of independent publications that engaged in muckraking, or investigative journalism. As James Aucoin discusses in his book The Evolution of American Investigative Journalism, early investigative journalism of the muckraking era (1900–1918) relied on private donations to sustain publications like McClures or, coincidentally, The New Republic.
