Police in Thanh Hoa Province, north-central Vietnam on Friday announced the arrests of 17 members of a loan shark group where debtors were forced to pay interest rates of up to 600 percent per annum. Investigators in the provincial capital city of Thanh Hoa on the same day filed charges against the 17 for their involvement in illegal money-lending activities. Previously, 13 members of this loan shark operation were arrested during simultaneous raids on their residences, mostly located in Thanh Hoa City, where officers seized 12 mobile phones, 37 loan contracts, four cars, VND477 million (US$18,700) in cash, and various loan-related documents. Kyokuyo Co., Ltd., Japan’s third largest seafood processor, has opened a US$12.65 million factory in Vietnam’s Long An Province, following concerns about Fukushima water safety and overdependence on China, according to Japan’s Nikkei Asia newspaper. As the first facility of the Japanese seafood giant in Vietnam, the factory specializes in producing crab and fish filets with workshops and machinery imported from Japan and Europe. Kyokuyo plans to export products from this factory to around the world, including to Japan and Southeast Asia. In August 2023, after Japan began discharging treated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, China banned all seafood imports from Japan. Kyokuyo is Japan's third largest seafood producer by assets after Maruha Nichiro and Nissui, as of March, Nikkei Asia said, citing Statista data.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) caused close to 270,000 deaths in Vietnam between 2020 and 2023, according to the World Health Organization. This alarming statistic was revealed at a press conference announcing the launch of a community program on AMR prevention and control in Hanoi on Friday. Besides, environmental pollution, including antimicrobial residues in water sources, has worsened AMR, threatening ecosystems and public health nationwide. The Việt Nam University of Fine Arts (VNUFA) has relaunched its Journal of Fine Arts Research as a tribute and celebration of the Vietnamese Teachers' Day on November 20.
